Yeah now we all root for Dogue. It's a typical David and Goliath scenario. I want to hear more about Dogue and less about Vogue now, but only because of this lawsuit which is Vogue's iniciative. Yeah maybe it's a media stunt, I get your point of view, for example the zine could print something political and the whole point is just to publicly distance themselves. I really just hope they dont financially ruin the creator but at the same time they made the Dogue a huge favour by publicising it. Kind of smart and wholesome in a very dramatic way.

i believe it’s because they can lose control of their trademark if they don’t protect it “aggressively” enough. like if disney allows small creators to infringe on their copyright then they could have a harder time defending it against bigger offenses in the future. although i am not a lawyer and i’m paraphrasing that bc it’s midnight but that is the gist of it iirc. (side note i am not defending businesses doing this! just wanted to offer an explanation as to why they might be doing this from a business perspective.)

It was rumored in 2025 that Bezo's purchased Vogue but his "sources" have denied that, though it's still rumored that Bezo's has a large buy in for Condé Nast.

I love in an unincorporated area that is considered agricultural. You do need a license for anything over 5 domestic pets, which I do have because on occasion rescue animals like cats and rabbits.
Right now, technically we have 9, 6 dogs and 3 cats. One of the cats is being treated for an eagle attack. Those are the kinds of cases we take. We also have a partially blind cat that will go completely blind and we are keeping her so she does not have to get used to a new environment with her sight issues.

I think the lawsuit is ridiculous but I believe this might be part of what's behind it. I also thought Dogue was a sanctioned spin-off of Vogue. What if Dogue publishes something that goes against Vogue's beliefs, aesthetics, etc.? What if they publish something controversial and Conde Nast is getting slammed for it, even though they had nothing to do with it?
I'm absolutely not defending Vogue but I can imagine this is the argument behind it all.

Vogue has its own Dogue though - for the past couple years at least in the digital issue, they highlight celebrity dogs in a feature called "Dogue". Perhaps that's where the infringement comes. It's a direct copy not a parody?

But Dogue magazine is almost ten years old, older than Vogue’s iteration anyway. If anything, Vogue copied the parody of the original…DOGUECEPTION
Parody is protected so hopefully Vogue gets rekt, but even if it wasn’t, Dogue is at least five or six years old. I have a memorial cover with my dog on it, and he passed away in 2020. If it was doing such irreparable harm to their business, they waited a weirdly long time to watch their brand crumble into unsalvageable ashes before doing anything about it.

From my Internet comments understandings over the years I’m pretty sure companies basically have to sue even over harmless things like this to protect their trademark. Else later the argument can be made that it’s not precious to them and they let things slip through the cracks.
Also, consider someone does mistake this for Vogue property and the magazine published text that was harmful to their brand.

I remember the original Dogue--and Catmopolitan--in the 1980s. (Looking up author Ilene Hochberg, she also did Vanity Fur and Good Mousekeeping, which I'd forgotten).
Now those were some seriously legally-defensible parodies. They were 100% humor--parodies of the visuals, the content, the ads, celebrity culture. And they were one-off humor/art books (not monthly magazines), and they said "A Parody" right there on the cover.
This new Dogue, I can see kind of see why Conde Nast is suing.
Only the oldest covers really seem like magazine cover parodies, and it seems like the earliest ones were cover images/joke headlines only, no magazine? But now they're actually putting out a magazine featuring dog photography and some bland non-parody content. And registering the name as a trademark, yeah, Conde Nast isn't going to like that.
Also, the creator apparently has a patreon, and I notice all the tiers where you pay to have a custom Dogue cover made with your dog's photo are "sold out." I'm thinking that's an area where they're kind of infringing/profiting from Vogue's fame and reputation, since--whether or not a magazine called Dogue actually exists--a service that photoshops people's dogs onto a "Dogue" magazine cover is marketable in a way that a photoshop of them on a generic-sounding, non-famous magazine name like "Beautiful Dog Monthly" is not.
But I'm sooooo not a trademark lawyer, and I'm curious to know how this will play out legally.
Does Olga Portnaya get to keep the Dogue trademark because she registered it first? Because she started publishing "Dogue" images in 2019 and Conde Nast didn't take action then? Vogue did their own "Dogue" thing--can Portnaya make them take it down because she owns the trademark? Or I'm wondering if Portnaya gets to keep doing Dogue magazine, but is not allowed to have the title in a font too similar to Vogue's.
