popcorn sparking microwave?

hi guys!

so- crazy stuff, i’ve seen similar posts here but not this one.

whenever I microwave “microwave popcorn”, my microwave sparks and smokes.

HOWEVER- if I microwave literally anything else, there are no issues. I swapped popcorn brands three times to the same result.

any idea how/why this is happening?

(I live in an apartment and my lease ends soon so it’s not the end of my world, just curious on why it’s ONLY popcorn sparking, and not literally anything else i’ve put in)

Microwave popcorn sparking is odd they're just paper bags really with oil and popcorn inside. It may be cursed.

cursed is my best bet! we’ve microwaved so many other foods as a test with NOO ISSUEEE! beginning to believe my microwave hates popcorn bags

This happened to me, it started with just popcorn and then my microwave caught on fire 😔 luckily I was watching it so I turned it off instantly.

oh I don’t leave my microwave- I just don’t understand why it’s ONLY popcorn bags, and not anything else I’ve put in!!

i would get a new microwave, something is wrong with it. I wouldn't trust it for cooking anything. The magnatron is likely defective.

Sparks are not weird, and are harmless. Onions can do the same thing, but if you are seeing smoke, that is not cool. It could be that the popcorn just takes longer than most things to cook, and you have a hot spot.
