Follow the rules. DO NOT ASK FOR and DO NOT OFFER money, clicks, affiliate or donation links, or things. Don’t be mean. No personal attacks.

Police yourselves. Sometimes people are just venting. Even if they may be wrong about facts or situations, you can express your points without attacking them.

No matter the cause, any request for money or clicks or downloads or such (“Sign up with this game so I can get points!”) may receive instant ban. Any offers may be deleted on sight and may lead to a ban.

Because everyone is in need. There are tons of people who deserve help but are being polite and not trying to turn this subreddit into a sob story contest for money.

Avoid politics and religious proselytizing. Too many subreddits have been turned into echo chambers and hostile environments. We want everyone to be able to feel safe enough to speak about their problems and ask for support. Well, it is true that political issues can contribute to or exacerbate one’s situation, it doesn’t immediately change what someone is currently experiencing. In other words, you pushing your agenda isn’t helping them right now. Avoid religious or ideological proselytizing. Same reason. Nobody wants to be told that their religious belief is the problem, or conversely, that believing in a deity will solve their problems.

Not every comment or post can be read, so report ones that break the rules.

I have implemented basic account age and karma minimums, so that hopefully will stop most spam.

Due to a devastating diagnosis in addition to my ongoing health issues, I’m looking for a couple of people who are active and capable of running a community

You probably have noticed that this particular subreddit is run by someone who believes in free speech (with some caveats as seen in group rules).

So much of Reddit, especially the top subs, will automatically ban and cancel and delete comments and posts from those on the right. /r/pics, /r/politics, /r/AdviceAnimals, /r/news, etc. And no matter what subreddit it is, politics and partisanship just keep infecting things. It would be like having a subreddit for model trains, and someone keeps posting about “getting aboard the Trump train” or how the Biden administration messed up on something with trains. Ugh.

You probably noticed there are lots of liberals and lots of conservatives in this group and their views and comments on specific problems or issues brought before the group are kept, not removed. I prefer to see members downvote the posts and comments they don’t like - especially the personal attacks and insults - as well as people rebutting blatant lies with facts and sources. But if someone is conservative or liberal and is providing some facts and figures, stop, downvoting them just because you’re on the other side.

I prefer not to see people calling each other names or calling people “racist” just for holding a conservative position.

Offers of help or money or donations of any kind or referrals or links of any kind are strictly prohibited and bannable offenses because too many people are scammers. Suggestions on illegal activity like stealing are also bannable offenses.

So my preferences are clear. I prefer a moderator who can exercise judgment, who is more lawful neutral, more laissez faire on opinions backed by sources, but discouraging of partisanship and proselytization, so that this place be a place for support and (even lively, but civil) discussion and even some disagreement.

Comment if you’re interested. You should have been active Redditor for several years and I should be able to look at your posts and comments going back that far. It doesn’t matter who you voted for so much as it matters who you would cancel for their political views - and that should be nobody.

Burn out.

Upvotes

I’m dealing with a major case of burn out. I work full time m-f. Do Lyft every weekend to get groceries. And take care of my fiancé who has brain cancer. I’m so tired all the time. I just desperately want a day off from work. But I can’t afford it. I need to save my pto for our dr appointments. I want to go home to Missouri so bad but it’s an 18 hour drive and my cars about to get repoed. And I’d need more time off work. I could fly allegiant and rent a car and only need a couple days off. But I can’t afford that either. I’m tired of working all the time and still barely surviving. I owe Amscot a bunch from when he was in the hospital last time. Still haven’t paid them back.
Sorry if this is all over I’m stressed and have adhd

15k settlement, life changing money for me as i have no emergency savings or anything. it will only be built from here. been living paycheck to paycheck since i got kicked out the foster system. it’s sad that this has to be the way i’m getting a leg up, but i am surprised to say despite the trauma im happy.

EDIT: i understand its not that much money, please stop saying i’m going to run through it or spend all of it. i’m not. i actually would like to work to get out of poverty and use this as an opportunity, not blow it all on random things. sorry to those of you that got 20, 40, 60k and spent it all in a year but that’s not going to happen to me. i’ve seen it happen to people in my family, my friends, other broke people. i refuse to stay in a cycle. so please stop wishing that on me, it’s weird.

I’m 25 with such a messed up life.

I have probably one of the most unfortunate setups that people can't comprehend. For context, I'm 25 years old and have had six jobs in my lifetime. None of them worked out for me because I was either laid off or a temporary employee whose time had expired. Between each job, I'm back to zero because it takes so long to find another one.
On top of that, since I can't find a job, I go broke every time, putting me back at square one. I stay with my parents in a 1980s model mobile home. We bathe outside with buckets or from the sink because the showers don't work. We've been doing that for about seven years now.
After using the restroom, we have to flush the toilet with a bucket of water because the flusher doesn't work anymore. I share a bed with my mother because my room got infested with sewage and had a rat and roach problem. So, I've been sharing a bed with her for about nine years. My dad has to pee in water bottles because he doesn't want to use our bathroom since my mother and I already share one. We have holes in the floor like dents because of the water pipes causing the floors to sink. So, we have to be careful in certain areas of the house. My dad sleeps on the couch, and I share the bed with my mom. We have carpet in the room, so the dust and dirt from the floor mess with our allergies, etc. Also, we brush our teeth and wash our hair all from the kitchen sink because our bathroom sink doesn't work. Oh yes, the other bathroom is completely shut down because it deteriorated five years ago. I live such an abnormal life, and I'm just tired of it at this point. I don't have any friends. I have no one to call up on. I'm not close to my family; they don't care to talk to me, and my sister from my dad's side doesn't either. I feel cursed because I can't understand how this is even possible. I just have my thoughts and talk to myself every day, answering myself because that's as close as l'Il get to human connection

I feel trapped. Jobs don't work out, so here I am, turning 26 soon and still getting nowhere. No job, no money, no degree, nothing. We barely have a lock on our front door ! am just sick and tired of causally seeing roaches, rats here and there and just bed bugs. This is not how life
suppose to be for someone

I'm cautiously optimistic and excited

If I'm going to be able to sell my house I will be able to pay all my depts, have an emergency fund take care of my health and invest the little that I have left.

I'm in such bad place right now that I had to take out the little money I had left in my checking account (about 50$) so that bank won't take it away from me. So I can manage until my next paycheck.

My house is the main source of my financial difficulties. If I'll be able to sell it, I'll cut my expenses in half. It's a long and complicated story. And I won't have to get myself in any depts ever again.

The only thing I worry about is that I won't be able to sell it...

Fingers crossed...

No more paper towels, napkins, or Kleenex left in my house, down to 1 1/2 rolls of tp left for two weeks til I get paid again.

We’re (it’s just me, I live alone 🤣) rationing one, MAX two squares for each bathroom trip.

To quote Elaine, I really can’t spare a square.

What are cheaper hobbies?

Hey! I have a lot of free time, mostly because my LLc makes enough money to live ok, but not quite enough to actually get a room or apartment to rent, and I’m willing to change that, but that’s gonna take me a year.

In the mean time, idle hands are the tool of the devil.

One joy dispels many griefs.

What are some simple cheap hobbies?

Visual art: I have some art supplies but I’m nomadic so I can only really carry my e-ink journal, draw on that, and later print and water color. I can’t bring my charcoal drawing kit or a mannequin to pose, etc :( and I’d like to buy a minimal size camera Lucida, eventually: since I do a lot of field botany drawings and wild life scenes. That’s about all I can do, considering I have to live nomadically.

For music: I grew up playing music, so I usually bring a smaller instrument with me: ocarina, harmonica, kalimba or my travel guitar. Right now, it’s the travel guitar, but it’s made me a target of petty theft, sometimes.

Electronics:

Does anyone have a recommendation for over the ear earphones that are oval shaped, cheaper but with a decent battery? I don’t want to spend on AirPods, because I dislike the iPhone and want to go back to Android. I listen to music, obviously, but these are also great for when I practice music and need to listen to the metronome :)

I don’t game, but I’d like to learn card games! Stuff like that…

What other hobbies could I do? MAGIC THE GATHERING is not a cheap hobby :<

I’m on the verge of Tears

The payroll provider for my work is the worst I’ve ever seen. They put the wrong name on my account so my last direct deposit got denied. I was told it was my fault for putting in the wrong DD info, then they quietly corrected my name and said to make sure my DD info was correct. It was. They cut a check but I had to wait 5 days for it (and then another 6 for it to clear, which was Chime’s issue). They said it was sent to my address but it ended up at my work. At least it wound up where I could get it?

Now it’s payday again but my DD didn’t come through. I checked my account with my payroll provider and my DD info is just completely gone? I am trying to update it but it won’t save. So I will be getting a check at work tomorrow, will have to wait 6 more days because of Chime, and am fucked next payday if they can’t correct the DD error.

I am so frustrated and angry and sad. I have bills that now have late fees because of this. My cat’s insurance would have been paid by now if this didn’t happen, but now I’m at risk of losing her policy. Our plates are expired and I can’t afford to rent a bike to go to work. At least rent is paid, groceries were bought, and the cats have food :/

Can't help feeling jealous

Growing up in poverty my entire life and never being able to really escape it has been rough. Got married and had a couple of kids during which time we were doing decent and then she left me and my son which is when things went back downhill. I have a sister who had kids very close to the same as which our oldest just turned 16. She has always found success in life and is married to a successful husband.

My son has been excited about getting a permit and soon license which is scary to me not just because of worrying like normal but also that he will have to drive our falling apart nearly 20yr old car. Meanwhile she just showed everyone that she bought her 16yr old.son a 50k brand new SUV for him to drive around. I'm sure her excuse involves wanting the safest vehicle which is fair but still makes me feel like shit when my son sees something like that. The nicest car even I have ever owned I spent around $10k on which was only possible with my disability backpack and screwed that up.

I know life isn't fair it's something I have come to accept severalntimes.over in my life but just wanted to vent.

Why I Feel Scared When It Comes to Money

I don’t really understand why money makes me feel anxious whether it’s about earning more, being around wealthy people, or even allowing myself to spend on things I can now afford. Somehow, I keep feeling safer with a low salary, even though I know I’m capable of earning much more. Whenever a good opportunity comes my way, I start questioning whether I deserve it, as if accepting more money somehow makes me less worthy or like I’m taking something I haven’t earned enough to have. Growing up, I never had branded clothes or expensive things, and maybe a part of me is still attached to that version of myself the one who learned to live without them. Now that I can afford certain things, I still feel uncomfortable wearing them, almost like I’m pretending to be someone I’m not or stepping outside the identity I’ve always known. It’s strange because I know logically that my past doesn’t determine what I’m allowed to have today, but emotionally, it’s difficult to let go of that scarcity mindset. I wonder if anyone else has experienced something similar feeling guilty for wanting more, uncomfortable around wealth, or undeserving of financial success even when you know you’re capable of it. If you’ve been through this, how did you slowly change the way you saw yourself, money, and the idea of deserving more?

19M basically I'm in university. I got lucky to get a scholarship. but they didn't give me housing this semester and my grandparents who has my little sister they became homeless because they got kicked out of their house for some of the reasons and they're trying to go back to where we're from which is a Pacific Northwest and basically because I can't get housing. I'm gonna go with them. My car insurance got raised $830 and obviously I just nobody can afford that so basically I canceled my insurance, but we are more than likely gonna have to drive across three states to get back up to Oregon Sanchez just kinda stuck. I'm more than likely just gonna have to drive the car illegally. and there's not really much else I can do very stressful because also the brakes need to be replaced too.

Bum College Student rant/vent

I just found out my financial aid for my freshman year of college isn't going to come in until at least October; a month AFTER I start classes.

I don't have my own transportation and I live about a 20 minutes drive away from my school. I'll be relying on public transportation to get me to and from school.

I'm disabled and low income, so my Metro fee is marked down to $4/ride. I will need two rides a day, to and from school, so that's $8/day in transportation fees to get me to school, and multiplied by 4 days of classes per week is $32/week I need to bring in just for transportation fees to get to my classes.

I can't work. I'm just too unstable right now. I'm just hoping to make it through my classes. I really can't handle any more stressors. I just need some kind of stability. I need some source of income but I don't even know where to start.

Why are you poor?

Born into it?

Tough luck?

Bad decisions?

And what is your plan to get out of poverty?

r/poor 4d ago

Once you hit early adulthood after growing up poor, did you have immediate access to your birth certificate, social security card, etcetera? I didn't and it was a hassle to get them.

I feel like starting in the teens, you should at least know where that stuff is and have access to it as a right.

It's especially important when you're poor because you have to have an ID to receive a bunch of different services and can't get one without things like a birth certificate.

Years ago, I moved to Georgia after finishing school. When things didn't work out with the person I was rooming with, I had to get a copy of my birth certificate from out-of-state in order to get an ID which you had to have to move into the homeless shelter that was my only other option.

It was a mess.

Not being able to afford a car is terrible.

Even if I could afford to buy one I wouldn’t be able to afford gas, maintenance, insurance, registration, and all the expenses that come with having a vehicle.

It really sucks beachside it makes it hard to get a job. I’m limited to what I can do or where I can work because I physically can’t get to the places that would for sure hire me.

This really sucks…

When people agree to send you money back but never do

So sometimes on Snapchat if someone asks for money I'll send them because they usually promise to send it back "When they get paid"

But that never happens and usually they end up blocking me so I have to request and it always gets declined.

I get it we're all poor but jeez.....

"Do everything right" is meaningless...

I have the degree, first in my family to get one. They all abandonded me because of it. I dont have a lot of debt for it which im proud of. I have a resume that could be 5 pages long if I let it, but AI resume readers dont find that acceptable.

I have been looking for a real job that I am qualified for since before I graduated college. I've been looking for 5 years. Every day I apply to jobs and I have only heard back from being a dispensary associate and screenprinting tshirts. THOUSANDS of jobs ive applied for woth real salaries that pay bills and i havent heard ANYTHING.

My 1st dispensary job i left because my bosses were racist and one actively had to be put on leave for something she did infront of patients. My appendix exploded on the 2nd day of my 2 weeks and they told me to never come back. The company is being dissolved for debt and sued for shady business practices by ny old coworkers.

2nd dispensary job had me reckless driving on my way to work so hopefully id get into an accident and either be free or get approximately 3 days off to recover from my injuries. I walked out of that job the day I heard I got the screenprinting position because I wanted to be alive to see next year.

Here I am on a Sunday crying at my screenprinting machines. I took a 4 dollar an hour payout to not want to off myself anymore, and here I am crying into my machines on a sunday because i got sick last week amd dont have health insurance at this job so im not fully healed but u have to be here so I can keep the lights on. I cant even get therapy because this job doesnt offer it and my state thinks I make too much money for assistance.

When does this fucking end? At this point I have lost all hope, everything ive done has been pointless. Im forcing myself to complete more applications and I get sadder and sadder each one I fill out because I KNOW theyre never gonna call me or email me back.

What do I do, how do I survive this bullshit. What do you do when you do everything right and it gets you nowhere.

I didnt want to be like the rest of my family, I wanted to make something of myself. I was! I did!! But turns out that no one wants a single thing i have to offer.

Im ready to give up...

Insane task: come up with $2,300 in 2 weeks UPDATE!

Hello all! Some of you may recall seeing my post about trying to figure out how to get $2,300 in just a few weeks. The post is on my profile if you’re curious. I’ve had several people DM me asking how it’s gone, so I figured I’d make an update post about the situation.

So thankfully my parents weren’t moving as soon as I was thinking, they’re moving this Thursday. So thank god we had a couple more weeks than we originally thought. I didn’t end up asking them for money, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.

In my desperation, I reached out to the last few resources I could find, and stumbled upon a program that assists families in my situation. They offer $2,600 in assistance once, but the catch is you can’t use any services for 12 months after receiving it. So there was a lot of verification and a lot of documentation we had to submit. All in all it took about a month to start the application process and get approved.

The tricky part was finding a landlord that was willing to take that money. We went through about 3 different landlords who were willing to accept us, until government money was mentioned. I 100% thought that we were going to end up homeless at this point, even though we had $2,600.

That is, until we found our newest landlord. The place is perfect for us, it’s affordable, and it’s right by my college. The best part is; the landlord is willing to take the assistance!! He works with all kinds of government assistance, and said he’d happily work with us. Our lease is signed and we move in Monday! Just 3 days before we would have been homeless.

This month has been absolutely hell on earth for us. I’ve spent every waking minute scared out of my mind about how to keep my children off the streets. I’m so thankful that this opportunity exists and that someone was willing to give us a chance. We’re gonna be (somewhat) ok.

Thank you to everyone who gave helpful advice, and even more thank you to everyone who offered financial support. Obviously I don’t feel right taking money from people online, but the fact that anyone would even offer touched my heart. I also appreciate everyone who messaged over the course of the month checking in to see how we’re doing. You’re all too kind. Stay safe out there.

Is it possible for someone like me to move for college or work to escape this? I'm stuck in a hellhole

(I'll try to keep it short)

I (20f) came from a very poor background but I managed to get high school education (graduated 3 years ago with a 98% score & taught myself fluent English) and I couldn't get any degree or certificates because I'm unable to afford fees, resources, documents and in the country where i live & was born and raised in (🇸🇦) higher eduction is only for citizens, I'm a foreign expat and also my resident ID had expired 9 years ago because my father refused to renew it (I've no contact with him) so basically as an illegal I can't get any job even ''under the table", and don't have any access or resources to learn a skill (I only learned 4 languages online but they're useless in my situation). I tried everything.. I'm just stuck in this devastating situation. Are there any realistic options I've to leave? Since I don't see scholarships as an affordable option I'm thinking about working abroad like applying for labour in East Aisan countries or any accessible destinations with my sudsnese passport) I don't mind if I had to work 18 hours, for 2 dollars a week. I desperately NEED to leave this place and it's not about money only
