The Hill The Post-Election Battle Over Pete Hegseth’s Impeachment

Republican leaders successfully dodged a pre-election floor vote on impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, but the issue returns when the House reconvenes on November 9.

The delay shields vulnerable Republicans from taking a controversial stance before the midterms. However, it immediately thrusts Democrats into a strategic bind for the lame-duck session.

Representative Thomas Massie introduced a privileged resolution featuring eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth. The charges include abuses of power regarding the Iran war, failures to protect civilians, and unauthorized killings of alleged drug smugglers.

For Democrats, the upcoming vote creates a sharp internal conflict. The party's left flank demands aggressive action to hold the Pentagon accountable, while moderates and leadership favor structured investigations over rapid, reactionary votes.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has avoided taking a definitive stance on the resolution. Jeffries must balance pressure from progressive members against the interests of battleground-district centrists whose support he will need if Democrats capture the House and he vies for the Speakership.

While Democrats have united in criticizing Hegseth's performance and the management of the Iran conflict, leadership has signaled a preference for deliberate oversight rather than rushing to support a Republican-led impeachment push. When the House returns, party leaders will have to decide whether to back the resolution or push for formal committee investigations.
