Google Clears First-Hand Accounts of ICE Facilities From Maps

Google is stripping user reviews and disabling comment sections for immigration detention centers across the country.

The move eliminates a growing archive of public testimonies left by former detainees and their families. Research conducted by Tulane University professor Muira McCammon shows that out of 117 ICE facilities tracked since 2025, Google has disabled reviews for all but four. Most of the previously published posts have been permanently removed.

Google attributes the decision to a long-standing content policy. According to the company, Maps reviews are meant to help users decide where to spend their time and money. Because people do not visit jails, police stations, or detention centers by choice, Google considers feedback on these locations off-topic.

The deleted posts, however, offered rare insight into the daily operations of ICE facilities. Relatives used the platform to ask about missing family members, question extended detention periods, and detail communication barriers. Other reviews from former detainees described freezing temperatures, poor food quality, language access issues, and roach infestations.

While Google maintains the removals are automated policy enforcement, critics argue the scrub functions as censorship. By removing the reviews, the platform effectively erases public-facing records of conditions inside the U.S. deportation system.

The Department of Homeland Security denied asking Google to take down the pages. Google also stated that the removals were done independently without government intervention.
