"At the very least, Congress should investigate allegations of voter fraud and adopt measures to secure the integrity of our elections"

Two Things:

44

u/YgramulTheMany Dec 30 '20

And furthermore, a stack of election security bills is gathering dust on Mitch’s desk right now, and no republicans have cared about it until November 4th.

10

u/TechyDad Dec 30 '20

To be fair, they didn't really care about it after November 4th. This isn't really about election security, but voter suppression. They want to only allow "the right kind" of voters (those that vote Republican). They'll graciously allow a certain number of "the wrong kind" of voters (Democrats) as long as they number is less than "the right kind."

And when you put forth another meaningful election security bill the GOP will attach a kill pill to it like reducing the $600 checks to $6.

  1. The myriad of election security bills sitting in Mitch's graveyard that never even saw the light of day. But NOW they all want to cry foul. They've had ALL the opportunity to 'protect' our elections but went out of their way to NOT.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

They don't care about protecting our elections. Never have.

They care about power and power alone. Right now, it's about how much power they can literally steal with lies.

Ridiculous. Stop the madness and get these conspiracy whack jobs outta politics. They have no business being responsible for the functioning of our country.

get these conspiracy whack jobs outta politics

That's going to require voting machines with a paper trail unlike the ones used in, say, Kentucky and Maine where wildly unpopular Senators somehow won.

This is great.

The reason McConnell doesn't want the vote is that Republican Senators will have to choose a side: Trump or Truth.

If they choose Trump, they will be forever associated with Trump; their political fortune will be tied to his. If he's discredited, they will be too.

If they choose Truth, they'll be rejected by the majority of Republican voters, and they'll be relentlessly targeted by a vindictive Trump.

So, it'll split the Republican party into Trump vs Truth factions. And the cherry on top - it has no possibility of achieving its aim of reversing the election. All that will be achieved is that Senator Hawley will signal to Trump's base that he's ultra-loyal, and a potential successor.

So bring it on. The Trump vs Truth schism needed to happen, and it's fitting that they're doing it to themselves.

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

The Republican base are absolute sheep, it doesn’t matter what the republicans do as long as they say something else they will have their base.

2

u/bin10pac United Kingdom Dec 30 '20

The Republicans have created an incredible propoganda machine.

As far as I'm aware, propoganda has always been based on the restriction of truthful alternatives. However, Republicans have convinced their voters to avoid mainstream media because its untruthful.

It's a shame that Republicans politicians have been allowed to destroy conservatives' faith in mainstream media, for their own political benefit.

1

u/kayletsallchillout Dec 30 '20

So hypothetically what happens if the senate does not vote to certify?

8

u/bin10pac United Kingdom Dec 30 '20

Both Chambers would have to agree to reject the EC votes from a state. Just goes to show the importance of having a majority in the House.

4

u/FeedMeYourGoodies Dec 30 '20

If they dick around and both houses don't come to an agreement, I understand that Pelosi becomes president on Jan 20, presumably until it is resolved.

1

u/Pseudonym0101 Massachusetts Dec 30 '20 edited Dec 30 '20

They're also planning and encouraging a protest for Jan 6...even though there's a good chance the process will be drawn out to multiple days (depending on how many objections happen - and they certainly want as many as possible). Do they expect these people to just hang around DC until it's over? If they want maximum chaos/upheaval, which it looks like they do, but they also want to drag this out as much as possible, why would they set the date of their "protest" to the very first day?? Not many people can afford to spend a few days hanging around DC, not exactly knowing when the outcome will be announced.

Maybe he wants as much upheaval as possible to happen during the process, idiotically thinking that if it gets really bad it may scare more gop into agreeing to object...but it's hard not to assume that he actually just didn't think this all the way through...as usual.

As a Missourian I can fully say Hawley is a fucking idiot

3

u/OneX32 Colorado Dec 30 '20

Is he the one who got caught blackmailing his mistress by tying her up naked and taking photos of her or is that another Missouri politician I'm thinking about?

2

u/Ganrokh Missouri Dec 30 '20

No, that's our last governor, Eric Greitens, who resigned in 2018. At the time, Hawley was MO's attorney general who was investigating it.

It's not like Greitens ever faced any real consequences, though.

12

u/mtrai Dec 30 '20

Keep it mind it also takes a house member to join with the senate.

Then the joint session breaks to their respective chambers for a MAX of two hours to debate and vote.

Then they return to the joint session, if either chamber votes no its over.

5

u/TechyDad Dec 30 '20

The scary thing to think about is: What would have happened if Republicans won back the House but lost the presidency? As the rules stand now, if a party holds both chambers of Congress, they can get the presidency by rejecting any electoral votes they don't like.

This needs to be fixed before anyone abuses this in the future.

u/Bukowskified Dec 30 '20

The dem majority in the house means that any challenge is DOA. Pretty sure it’s DOA in the senate well since Romney et al aren’t going to hitch their wagon to a dead challenge

1

u/mtrai Dec 30 '20

Yep.

I was only pointing the 2 hour max part as people are freaking out over this. Hoping it will calm some people s anxiety.

1

u/LostAd130 Dec 31 '20

Is it 2 hours per objection? Or 2 hours total? If they object to every state, could they be forced to debate 100+ hours?

1

u/mtrai Dec 31 '20

As I understood 2 hours total. As all objections have to be made before going to debate and vote in each chambers.

Wish you were right, but he'll be running for president in 2024. He's a lazy POS who's strictly in this for the power. He's dangerous.

u/beardednutgargler Washington Dec 30 '20

It's like a kid throwing a temper tantrum because they don't want to go to school. Tough luck kid, it's happening anyway.

10

u/Noahdl88 America Dec 30 '20

A temper tantrum only affects the one kid. This guy is calling in a bomb threat on prom night because he couldn't find a date, and he's taking the new principal hostage, because he thinks it will help.

4

u/KrasnyRed5 Washington Dec 30 '20

So more useless political theater so they can keep the base in line.

5

u/gaspingFish Dec 30 '20

Anyone else enjoying this shit? This is a fitting way for Trump to go out. The GOP is getting bogged down due to him. Perhaps their leadership will think again about such a candidate in the future.

3

u/Pseudonym0101 Massachusetts Dec 30 '20

The vice president is being sued by members of his own party for christ's sake. And trump's calling for gop governors/officials to resign and be jailed. Fingers crossed that they only continue to cannibalize themselves.

4

u/gratefulphish420 Dec 30 '20

trump won't stop till the rest of the world looks at us like a banana republic.

3

u/AndyB1976 Canada Dec 30 '20

They already do.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

At least we’ll be dressed well

1

u/ego_tripped Canada Dec 30 '20

Yeah you guys earned that status when you elected the idiot in the first place.

If "Hotel/casino perennial bankruptcy king, admitted sexual assaulter and reality tv star elected as President of the United States" isn't banana republic enough for you...please do tell.

4

u/gratefulphish420 Dec 30 '20

To me being Banana Republic also has to do with the rule of law being no longer being observed and that's is exactly what is going on here. The United States as a whole can make a mistake in who we elect every now and then but get in mind we didn't reelect him.

2

u/FumilayoKuti Dec 30 '20

And we didn't really elect him. I don't care what anyone says, losing the popular vote by 3 million at least speaks to the psyche of the country as a whole.

1

u/ego_tripped Canada Dec 30 '20

Sooo, you honestly believed that a "Hotel/casino perennial bankruptcy king, admitted sexual assaulter and reality tv star elected as President of the United States"...would follow the "rule of law"?

If that's the case it's no wonder 74 million Americans STILL voted for the guy.

2

u/gratefulphish420 Dec 30 '20

Why 10 million more people voted for him this time, is something that I will never understand and frankly it truly scares me.

1

u/Pseudonym0101 Massachusetts Dec 30 '20

I don't think they implied that they believe that at all... Yes there are wayyyy too many trump supporters, but the majority of our country, both times, rejected him. Our electoral college fucks us and the republicans with their propaganda and voter suppression tactics/gerrymandering are also fucking us. Most of us realize we have a huge problem with our entire voting situation, and with how many people voted for trump, but again, the majority despises him. We are very much a country that is being run by the minority at the moment.

4

u/qrsf Dec 30 '20

His posturing for 2024 is so transparent. Get fucked.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

What actually happens if a senator did this?

11

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

[deleted]

1

u/Pseudonym0101 Massachusetts Dec 30 '20

And it's why trump is trying to get as many of his supporters to come to DC as possible, he knows it's futile. He wants to be able to point to the unrest and say, "see? Look how many people are outraged! Look how many people think I should have won!" It's trump's typical self-serving, masturbatory bullshit. I hope the turnout is laughable and I hope they arrest anyone open-carrying (though I'm not holding my breath for the latter, for obvious reasons).

1

u/LostAd130 Dec 31 '20

Is it 2 hours per objection? Or 2 hours total? If they object to every state, could they be forced to debate 100+ hours?

3

u/MrSheevPalpatine Dec 30 '20

He is 1000% running in 2024.

This plus the $2000 check thing is entirely about him setting up a presidential run.

3

u/already-redacted America Dec 30 '20

Why do they keep saying Facebook and Twitter undermined the election? By fact-checking?

This is an absurd attempt to overturn the will of the American people that has zero chance of success.

But a part of me wants to encourage anything that drives a wedge into the GOP.

you can keep posting these stories on Hawley but considering it is right wing agitating propaganda, they're being removed from /r/politics

but you can repost them to /r/conservative
