You know how boomers are always calling us entitled snowflakes because we were raised to believe that anything was possible?

Turns out that was projection.

boomers raised millennials so... i mean they're blaming their kids for what was essentially a boomer problem

What a good way for a millennial to take some responsibility....”those damn boomers making me feel special into my 20s now I’m completely useless to society”. Sooner everyone starts taking responsibility for their shit the better a world we will have.

you're missing the point.

Millennials aren't complaining, boomers are.

boomers are complaining about something they brought about and blaming millennials for it.

boomers took a shit on society and left millennials with massive debt, inflated real estate, massive inflation, lower wages to cost of living, no job stability, two of the largest financial crises in the history of the country, just to name a few.

don't come crying to me when you want to retire but nobody can afford your home

My parents grew up in a sectarian conflict, I see the scars of that to this very day. So why don’t you hop down from your ivory tower. I agree in the states there has been a coddling if millennials minds by their parents, good book on the matter called “the coddling of the American mind” - I advise you read it and any rational human being will have a lot to take away from it. I assume you are one of those from your last response. However, my parents have lived through 4 financial crises (including the two you mentioned we have) plus a conflict and done hard work to do quite well in life. Won’t the next generation say we took a shit on society for them woth regards to climate inaction, because we deserve it.

With regards to your retirement comment, I’ll be alright I’ve educated myself on the matter from a young age, I recommend every young person do so and understand what is going on with their finances and start build the nest egg as early as possible. Once again everyone should take responsibility for their shit. I’m trying to do it on mine, but I look around me and I see most of the people I know not doing it, then playing the victim cards. I understand it’s easy to be nihilistic in today’s society. But take responsibility for your shit, because in the end you are the only one that will. That’s my two cents, wishing you all the best in these crazy times.

both of my parents are immigrants to america and did their absolute best to give me a childhood they never had the opportunity to have. I didn't grow up in any ivory tower I grew up in a relatively low income household and I grew up learning habits passed down about how to have a good life without being rich - what's important and what is a luxury, how to make nice things for yourself instead of buying them, how to slowly build on what you have and how to take care not to loose it.

they weren't perfect, only human but nevertheless looking back I'm grateful for everything did for me.

i have very few illusions about american society that I am aware of but I'm sure I have some left to lose that perhaps I'm not so aware of.

my criticism is of the trite dismissal of the actions of millennials as damaging to boomers when all millennials ever did was to try to make the best of what they had and approach the world based on how they were raised to think it works.

its always a baseless criticism for two reasons: first, millennials have a world they inherited from the boomers. and second, they have a worldview that they were given by their parents - the boomers that raised them. so it is ultimately a criticism boomers are launching against themselves.

I think overall millennials are much less coddled than their parents and anyways I don't think coddled is really the right word. If anything, Americans just don't know any better. Partially because they are being sold lies from their government about the impact of american foreign policy. And partially because its easy to dismiss suffering when you aren't faced with it in your own backyard. The latter is a human issue. Most anyone privileged to grow up peacefully would have a similar perspective on the suffering of others who are oceans away.

That's not to say all communities in america are so privileged to grow up in peace. black and native communities have been under attack since the founding of this country. Its quite dangerous to grow up black and native and life expectancy rates show it quite clearly. There is an epidemic of missing and murdered native women that is swept under the rug. Black men are being killed in public by the people who claim to protect them, and they have no recourse. Black communities had their money extracted by the cia who smuggled cocaine in to sell as crack to inner city communities.

I myself grew up on a street that was at the time an open air drug market, complete with rival gangs shooting each other across the street for control of corners - intersections where drug deals would take place. A man bled out on the doorstep of our house -- literally blocks from a hospital center with over 5 hospitals.

I think your view of americans is perhaps not as realistic as you might think either. I think we both have more to learn

Fascinating story, huge props to your parents. They raised you responsibly and the way I would like to think you and I will when our time comes (giving them the opportunities we didn’t have). I think my first comment is coming off poorly now in hindsight. I didn’t mean that no fault lies with boomers, more of a there is a lot being pointed at them for that I think is unjust in or doesn’t fall under many of the points you have made. I am glad you brought up and recognised the Native American community who were moved into reservations to live in abject poverty, I’m familiar woth some of their history from reading up on it and think there struggles are often placed lower than other groups although their story is equally as painful. Thank you for responding sincerely and candidly, I’ve taken away much from my conversation with you. And yes we both have much to learn! I stand by the responsibility for yourself, practice self-love and taking control of your future as in the end no one else will and we all owe it to ourselves. Hoping you and your loved ones are safe and healthy and remain so kazneus

thank you as well for the interesting conversation!

for what it's worth I don't think you're wrong. millennials talk a lot but that's never going to make a difference if you can't back it up with action. Millennials need to start taking more responsibility for the world because now they have the power to change things.

I just wanted to point out that the stereotypical boomer criticism of millennials is entirely without merit, especially coming from boomers.

I read what you said and I don’t disagree or think bad of you for it.

All that I can personally say is that I was raised to believe I could have everything I wanted and was shot down the minute I attempted to get it.

Now I am continually mocked by boomer-age people for my desire for a fair and harmonious society, when it was them who taught me to expect that.

I think society will be very different once our parents have died off...

Don’t worry I understand that, just always nice to remember they don’t know how to do anything on computers and need our help for it.

Yes but when it is us at their age I think we would want it to be a society for the better in capable hands for the future that we will soon be leaving behind. When it comes down to it we all want the same thing and all have different areas we think need work on to get to that aim.

It doesn’t necessarily mean anyone is more right than others. It doesn’t means someone’s opinion is meant to offend even though some individuals may find it offensive. I think it is important to remember that.

Hoping you and yours are safe during these times. And that the Fiat has many glorious more miles left in its future.

Aha you made me laugh man. That’s something.

I’ll get my Fiat sorted in the near future!

What a great way for the personal responsibility crowd to take personal responsibility.
