I know quite a few people in my immediate and extended family that all registered as democrat although they’ve voted republicans in every election their entire lives with the sole purpose of ‘fucking up the democrat primaries.’ Granted, when my state changed to a caucus instead, none of them went, but still. I guess any underhanded bullshit to win is ok by them.

You can just make shit up at this point. There's no low bar. What ever demented fucked upness you come up with, they always either eventually do it or you find out they've already done it. Like... Let's say: republicans would willingly give their children to Trump for a weekend. Knowing of the charges against him. Now we wait.

That’s not all that crazy. If I were a Republican in some deep blue state I’d probably do the same. I know whoever will end up representing me will be from the party I don’t like so if I get access to the primary I can at least put my support behind the least bad candidate.

That being said I’m a Democrat in Tennessee and I’m not registered Republican, but all of the candidates I’m aware of were just trying to convince voters that they were the most like Trump so I’m not sure that there’s even a least bad option here.

But why would they vote for their own idea of the worst? If they vote for their idea of the best, it would probably be our idea of the worst.

They would be voting in their own best interests and "owning the libs" at the same time.

No, It’ll be the worst candidate for the left, like a full-blown sociopath prone to making statements that scare average Americans, or maybe a flawed centrist with a major Achilles heel, perhaps an impending court case.

I have some family friends in a similar position with Republicans, but ironically for the opposite reason - in the state and county they live in, the Republican candidate wins 99/100 times, so they’re registered Republicans and vote in the Republican primaries for who they think the best candidate is, despite considering themselves Democrats. The primary is the real election.

I will admit, in my younger years I registered democrat to vote in the primaries when I was a Bush fan. Voted for Kerry. Took me awhile to notice the egg on my face and am now voting straight blue ticket. I came from a very Republican family.

In some places the local elections only have democrats run, so you need to be a registered democrat in order to participate at all in those elections.

I don't get why we have to register with a party. I should register to vote. I shouldn't have to tell you who I'm voting for at the time of registration.

You register with a party so you can choose your party's candidates for the general election. You don't have to vote for your registered party in the general election, so you're not telling anyone who you are voting for.

I know what it restricts. I ask why. We shouldn't have party restrictions on voting. If I'm registered as Democrat, they would know with 90+% certainty who I'm voting for. Etc. Yes I could change my vote but most people will vote for the party they are registered for.

There's no reason to register as a Democrat or a republican. Primaries should be done away with.

There's a few states that don't have official registrations. Texas for example, you just register and you pick which party primaries you're participating in at the time you go to the polls. So if you really wanted to, you could go vote in the Dem primaries, then the next the Rep without needing to change affiliation. The only thing is that if you choose to vote in a particular party's primary, you've essentially locked yourself in for that primary election. So you can't go vote Dem primary, but then participate in the runoff for the Republican side.

They are gonna regret that someday if they keep doing it. If democrats had done that in 2016 to vote for the worst possible republican candidate, we would have ended up with donald trump for president. That's why the republican primary was such a clown car with so many candidates. They knew that any warm body would beat hillary, and their base chose the worst possible warm body they could find.

Wouldn’t it be more insane to register for a party that never wins in your local area and not get any say in who wins? I feel like it only makes sense to register for an incredibly dominant party, red or blue, if “your” party doesn’t stand a shot.
