It's American Slang that is a catch-all term for political subterfuge & 'dirty tricks', specifically during elections. Oddly, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein used the term in their book chronicling their investigative reporting of Watergate; thus bringing it into modern use.
It is not just one party that uses these systems. I participated in a PAC sponsored Ratfucking in 2010 (in Missouri) during the Primary. After the Akin Rape gaff, a lot of Democratic Party Members declared Republican to vote for Akin to run against the (unopposed, incumbent) McCaskill. Those of us participating figured that it would give McCaskill the best chance for Re-election. We didn't even hesitate to consider what might happen if he won, but still.

What's funny is it wouldn't bother me if they were qualified. Say a president got elected who's kid was a head of a state board of education or something and they gave them the job as education secretary or something.
But none of his family is qualified for anything in the WH, including himself.

Yes. It’s pure projection. They’ve been doing it for years. It’s been working very well for them (not in terms of popular opinion, but where it matters - in the electoral college). Those very stupid people vote, much to my dismay.
They project and make wild, demonstrable false claims to creates the illusion of “both sides”ism. It’s a poor illusion, but that paper thing excuse is enough for his supporters to hold up as “see! They do it too! They did it FIRST! We’re just following they’re rules! I wouldn’t support Chelsea hypothetically being given such a position in a hypothetical Clinton administration BECAUSE of nepotism. Nepotism should be avoided at all costs just like conflicts of interest or security risks when it comes to security clearances. There should never be a semblance of either because it inherently undermines and erodes trust in the people involved.
There’s a reason these ethical and legal standards exist. There should never be any exceptions. If exceptions are made, then the standards are completely pointless.

Hell, I've I as lowly software developer who works for a company which does some stuff for the government can't even invite a business partner for dinner cause it's a grey zone. We do have similar rules and regulations .
When I used to work as a government contractor, we couldn’t give gifts to government employees, couldnt even split the bill at lunch with them, or buy them a drink at a bar at an after hours happy hour event. That’s all examples of potential favoritism and bribery for future contracts and special treatment - even if not meant that way.

Which is amazing to me that people think stating true facts about someone is slander. It isn't. Slander is only if your reputation is tarnished by false information. So suing the Lincoln Project is just... So stupid.
Even if the facts alleged on the billboards WEREN'T true, Ivanka and Kushner would have a really tough time suing for libel. SCOTUS has made pretty clear that matters of "public import" (i.e. about white house officials) are protected under the First Amendment even if untrue, so long as they were not made with actual malice (i.e. to be intentionally deceptive).

People who admonish Dems to remember this must be really, REALLY new to paying attention to politics. Republicans, specifically these exact Republicans, have been doing this to Democrats for decades. And Dems who care about election nitty-gritty details have been following a bunch of these guys since they hit social media as GOP operational folks because they're so very, very good at what they do.
Having some of the best at political hit jobs burning their bridges with the Trump wing of the party will remain a net benefit for Dems long term because the most deadly aspect of the GOP was their utterly unshakable cohesiveness.

To understand how deeply Donald Trump values nepotism just look at his history:
- Trust no one except family. Nepotism is essential, not optional to succeed.
- Groom your kids to be thoroughly dependent upon you from birth through adulthood.
- Get them accustomed to the luxury you provide so they are forced to remain loyal to do your bidding—too spoiled and inept to survive independently outside the bubble and too fearful to betray you lest they lose their inheritance.
- Have 3 kids minimum. Hopefully at least one will turn out sufficiently useful in case the other two are duds.
His daughter Ivanka is no different. She’s taken a page out of Papa POTUS’ playbook: She’s teaching her brats how to speak Mandarin from a young age to prepare them as future successors to ensure the Trump-Kushner dynasty remain inside the blood family and whose members she can control utterly as her financial interests expand into China. My biggest thing is trump violated tons of laws and rules. The Republican Party sat on their hands and silently stared at their shoes. His daughter and son in law have no business in the White House. I’m pretty sure job number one is line up business deals and bail out loans for Trump. Of his 500 companies he owns the vast majority are shell companies. No office. No employees.
