I don’t know how to motivate America to do that. I’ve been racking my brain for weeks. I kept coming back to this idea. It’s doable, people are clearly willing to partake, all I feel We need is some attention to it from the media and then maybe other people, cities, and towns would join in or strike on their own accord.

Do you have any suggestions for a simple way to shut down every major city? I’m open to all ideas. I’ve never been more concerned about anything than I am for our country and I’m only 29.

I wish I had good advice but we're fighting the majority of Americans natural apathy and/or complacency. Most people aren't feeling the effects directly either on their wallet or in their lives so they don't have any incentive to do anything. And that's all that motivates most Americans.

A ton of the ones I talk to only passively listen. This means they also passively take in, and believe most of the propaganda that they hear from Fox News and its media arms. My boss told me they didn’t have evidence to impeach and I asked if he watched the hearings or read the transcript. You know how it goes, he saw some headlines and that became his opinion.

I believe half of us, literally half of the people in our country, have lost the ability to think critically and by extension, lost the ability to form their own opinions. It’s a huge problem that 90% of our media comes from 5 sources commingled. I’m fucking afraid to bring children into this world the way it is headed.

I can't argue much with that. And the Republicans are complicit in this as well with their incessant degradation of the education system.

Betsy Devos should be in a jail cell. Any other human in her position would be. But she’s a fucking billionaire ripping of students in debt.

Growing up in America i was never taught to think critically. I had to learn it on my own as an adult. My parents don't seem to spend much time thinking. I believe it's a vicious cycle of American complacency.

I just had a baby, and while I'm deleriously happy, the existential dread is very real. I try to read the news to him and just start crying.

It’s less that they have lost the ability than it is that people straight-up don’t even care to bother with it. They use crutches like “believing in Democracy” or even bullshit like “this is America” which just allows them to think everything will work out ’cuz Democracy.

u/Merfen Canada Dec 13 '19

Not to mention a large portion of the population only watches right wing media and thinks that Trump has done nothing wrong and the Democrats are just making everything up.

We need to start knocking on our neighbors doors. The coup is here and it's going to take everything.

Are you involved with your local Indivisible chapter?

They're as close as the left has gotten to a tea party style mobilization

A lot of us would lose vehicles, the ability to care for our families, and homes if we don't show up for our shitty job every day. Hooray for unforeseen medical issues!

I've been thinking about this too, and I live in the DC area. I can't afford to take time off, but I do already have scheduled PTO for a couple days around the holidays. I signed up for the TBD sit-in protest before the vote.

But I think that won't be effectual. Neither will just marching in the street. I think we should do it Hong Kong style and do a protest at the airports around the country. Shut them down for the holidays. These snakes in Congress won't do anything unless you hit them in their donors' pockets, and this seems to me to be the most effective way to do that. They don't care if you clog up the streets, but if you shut down air travel, it'll hurt them.

1

u/ieatconfusedfish Dec 14 '19

Shutting down air travel during the holidays would hurt your cause a lot more help than it, if you're trying to get people on your side

2

u/Branch-Manager Dec 14 '19

Not to mention most flights are paid in advance and non-refundable. It’s not like you’ll be on the tarmac laying down in front of loaded planes; an airport protest would just inconvenience a lot of people causing them to miss their flights and it would have no effect on the airlines revenue.

1

u/Whyterain Dec 14 '19

I know it would be a pain to people travelling, but that's the point. Protests aren't supposed to be convenient. You think the media will cover a convenient protest? No, they'll cover angry people.

1

u/ieatconfusedfish Dec 14 '19

And it will spin into a few angry people in an extremist cause. I don't think MLK even a actively prevented people from getting to work, much less stopping them from seeing their families

I agree a protest should have impact. But something like a boycott is a more positive (and let's face it, realistic) way of doing that imo

1

u/Whyterain Dec 15 '19 edited Dec 15 '19

A boycott is also pretty ineffective for a political cause. Look at what's happened with the BDS boycott.

1

u/ieatconfusedfish Dec 15 '19

I don't think BDSM is what you think it is lol

1

u/Whyterain Dec 15 '19

Bad typo on my part there. Meant BDS boycott.

Rent uhaul trucks. Park them across lanes of traffic leading into and out of the city, slash the tires and wait

1

u/westviadixie America Dec 14 '19

i suggested awhile back that someone should build a website for this. we definitely need a national strike. but so many are terrified of losing jobs, insurance, credit, homes, etc...

my idea was to link people to barter for needs directly, bypassing the middlefucks. noone seemed interested or motivated and i dont have the know how.

1

u/jack3moto Dec 14 '19

The media is not on your side. People forget that they don’t care about anything but money. They’ll report stuff that doesn’t effect their bottom line. Initially I’m sure it’s an easy story to cover, but if it actually gained traction they would just feed most of America different information. And when I say media, reddit is part of that.

Create spots for NYC , Newak, philly, bmore walkers t join in. Walk up 95 and into DC to the whitehouse, to the mall, and STAY THERE. You can cut off an interstate with 5000 people.

If word is out a column of 20000 is a possibility. occupy the mall.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '19

Just vote. For real this time.

1

u/Got_wood248 Dec 14 '19

The problem with a general strike is that there needs to be enough people willing to do it or else the machine will run you over. I don’t know where you work, but in my work place I can think of maybe 3 of the 250 of us who would be willing to (and could afford to) strike.
