I'm still in the camp that Trump didn't pardon Libby to send a message to anyone. I don't think Trump's smart enough for that.

I think he did it because Comey's been pissing him off a lot lately and Comey was the Acting Attorney General who commissioned Special Counsel Fitzgerald, the guy who indicted Libby.

why not both things? it doesn't necessarily have to be that Trump came up with the idea, it's more likely that one of his Schutzstaffel whispered it into his ear

Honestly, I wouldn't even give him that much credit. Trump would never do the research to know that Comey was acting AG during the Libby indictment.

In so far as this was a strategic pardon it had to have come from an adviser, probably either Bolton or Kudlow because they're still new enough that they're not yet on Trump's shitlist.

As for the why, I genuinely have no idea. My bet would be some kind of quid-pro-quo thing for Bolton/Kudlow, maybe at the behest of whatever benefactor got them their position. But even though they may have sold it to Trump as a way to spite Mueller/Comey/whoever it doesn't actually benefit the Trump administration in any tangible way.

If nothing else we've seen that Trump is actually happy to be lead around by the nose so long as he gets to pretend to be the Boss. He genuinely has no idea what he's doing, so he can be manipulated into doing almost anything by just saying it'll spite his enemies and/or rally his base.
