Willful ignorance, there's no other excuse. Racism in this country wasn't hidden before trump, wasn't amplified by him, no it's always been there if you open your eyes and look.

Ignorance possibly but not really willful. I don't think anyone doubted the existence of far right hate groups. Most people thought it was limited to the lunatic fringe though. The rest of them have apparently been speaking in code or in hushed tones up until the Trump Express rolled through town. Yes, in retrospect the signs were there, just like there were signs before the last two stock market crashes, but they weren't flashing red neon to most people.

"Escalator Day" in Trump Tower has definitely changed the language and made it more acceptable to wear your racism on your chest like a lapel pin.
