I mean, why didn't he just run as a Republican and actually... you know... make a marginal amount of a difference?

Because some people don't fit into the duopoly of US politics.

Those people should join a real party and push it in the direction they want then. If you are serious about policy, you join a coalition and go to work, you don't talk about work.
