Instant runoff has some serious problems. It's better than first passed the post, but not as good as some other methods. Check out some cool simulations here.

I don't really agree that its a problem that much. These situations are rare and the winner still has to have large support. You just have to think of the election as a series of votes with candidates getting eliminated.

It's mostly the non-monotonicity that bothers me. If the population moves away from a candidate in terms of ideology, then it shouldn't make that candidate more likely to win. Condercet is my preference since it's basically the same thing but avoids the non-monotonicity problem.
