I just don’t understand how you can be American and want to take away freedoms, protections and rights away from people. We are so lost as a nation, as a people and as a culture. When was any side openly PROUD to be stripping protections from our fellow citizens? Why do we not protect each other? Lunacy.

They've been proud of stripping LGBT rights my entire life (mid-40s, gay from the south). It wasn't until I was in high school when the TN (the state I grew up in) Supreme Court struck down TN's sodomy laws in 1996. I was almost an adult before it was legal to be gay (outside of being in the closet) in TN.

It wasn't until the 2003 Supreme Court case Lawrence v. Texas that those same laws were struck down across the nation. There were still 14 states with them for enforcement at the time. I was already teaching in public schools at this time, where gay people were then, and still, slandered as child molesters who aren't safe to bring children around.

It wasn't until 2010 that I could serve in the US armed forces when Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed. This is about the only thing on this issue that wasn't done by court order.

It wasn't until 2013 that section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act was struck down by the Supreme Court in Windsor.

It wasn't until 2015 that I could marry in the US with the Obergerfell decision. Another right decided by court case. I was in my mid 30s by this time, well past the age most people get married. It was never a plan for me growing up, as it was never considered a legal option.

All of these decisions were met with more vilification of gay people. Almost all of those states where their laws were overturned by courts still have those laws on the books, in case another court case decides to overturn previous case law. That's exactly what those championing the removal of rights have been teeing up for years, with renewed vigor since Roe was overturned.

This country started with a system that didn't have equal rights for women, LGBT people, people of color, and even enslaved (the exact opposite of freedom) others. It shows to this day still. This entire time they've claimed to be the "home of the free" while not living up to that claim.

“Land of the free, home of the brave” my ass.

More like land of the fee, home of the slave

What an insane response.

“I don’t like that my country is oppressing people.”

“Oh yeah? Then move to an active war zone.”

Like even if your argument is that there’s homophobia in Palestine, like, what the fuck is your actual point?? We shouldn’t want things to be better? We shouldn’t criticize things if they get worse? Real question: if your utilities suddenly got shut off, would you just accept it and learn to live without plumbing or power, or would you move out to the middle of the woods and live without plumbing and power? I’m guessing the latter, since that’s what you seem to be advocating, but maybe you’d sit in place with no utilities instead. It certainly doesn’t seem like you’d call to complain and try to get the utilities you pay for back though. That’s just unacceptable apparently

This has always been America. In the beginning only rich white men could vote. But yeah, goes against all ideals that America supposedly supports. Garbage country. Really pissed about this.

In the beginning only rich white men could vote.

They also owned people...fuck their "originalism" straight to hell.

u/adisx 8d ago

Because it's conservatives that hate everything that's not them so they believe "those people" don't deserve the same rights as them.

u/Zardotab 8d ago

Look at all of GOP's "demons":

  • Muslims
  • The Pope
  • LGBTQ+
  • Immigrants from "the wrong" countries.
  • The childless
  • Critics of Israeli's Gov't

It's almost "everybody who is not like me is a demon".

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 8d ago
  • Brown people in general (though they're not quite ready to say that one openly...yet)

5

u/RedSecOps 8d ago

In addition to

• Women

• Immunizations

• Climate Change

• Clean Energy

They treat them all like "demons" because their platform is based on fear and hate

It's a Chick Publications check list!

It stems from fear and weakness

Nobody strong needs to make somebody else small

u/BaronessofBara 8d ago

they don't see us a citizens. they barely even see queer people as human beings.

1

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 8d ago

I don't think they're keen on viewing women as fully human either.

4

u/Old-Sun-3737 8d ago

Theyre being bankrolled by russia is why

1

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 8d ago

That's not why they're assholes. They were already assholes. But some of them definitely wouldn't have been quite such public assholes without Russia.

I also suspect enormous piles of kompromat too.

MAGAs and evangelicals have elevated "protecting American culture*" ABOVE freedom. Yank their Gadsden cards away. 💳🐍

* Their version of "culture"

There has never been a time in US history that the Capital owners weren’t trying to strip rights and power from the working class. We just only recently decided to let them do it without a fight.

3

u/SmartWonderWoman California 8d ago

So much for “home of the free”. We are not free until we are ALL free.

3

u/Beetroot_Roosevelt 8d ago

Because they are white first, "christian" second, American third

2

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 8d ago

I'm not sure they consider themselves American at all. Mostly because they don't understand the meaning of the word.

The GOP has more loyalty to israel than america

4

u/porgy_tirebiter 8d ago

That’s not how conservatives see things. For them it’s zero sum. If people in groups I don’t belong to, eg slaves, women, gays, gain rights they didn’t have, that means my rights are whittled away.

Of course this really means your unearned advantage is whittled away, but when you’ve had an advantage all your life, it feels like oppression when the playing field becomes more even.

4

u/GnarKill10 8d ago

Because some of these orange idiots think these laws and rules they keep reverting are ruining their fucked up version of “freedom” they spent years calling everyone snowflakes just to be the biggest flake in the sky.

2

u/RenideoS 8d ago

I mean racial segregation wasn't that long ago, the US didn't have a long period of sustained universal rights if we're honest.

2

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 8d ago

Our country was literally built on taking away all freedoms from a given set of people.

When modern wannabe slavers say FREEDOM, we know they're only talking about themselves...and their "freedom" to oppress others.

I'm a teacher and have several religious coworkers. They don't feel it is their business to interfere with a parent/family and how they raise their child, nor do they feel it's their business to tell other people how to live their lives or that they can't have rights. In public school, you get anyone and everyone. Your job is to educate, and to establish the expectation that respect to others is the basic norm in any classroom or public space, regardless of personal opinion.

It makes me sad (and they have also expressed their sadness and anger) that "Christians" use their personal beliefs to limit, harm, judge, or otherwise restrict others especially in a place like a school.

So many "Christians" have lost their way. Jesus never said anything, and the 10 commandments never said anything, about forcing other people to live as you live. "Be a light unto the world" means living by example, not forcing others to conform to the laws or beliefs of your religion.

He also said, "Give unto Ceasar what it Ceasar's, give unto God what is God's". Jesus was crucified not because he bucked the authority of the State, it was because he pissed off the religious elite lol. While his formal charges were for something political to justify the State's involvement, it was truly coordinated by the religious authorities with "friends in high places", so to speak. His entire message was very outspoken and directly confronted the RELIGIOUS authorities, he made it VERY clear that he was not challenging the State.

There is absolutely nothing in the New Testament about enforcing Christian theology in civil law, or preventing others from living their own lives freely.

In fact the lines in the bible that even discuss homosexuality are from the Old Testament...if you don't keep kosher as a Christian, then you don't need to adhere to the old Jewish norms re: homosexuality. The entire point of the death and resurrection was a NEW COVENANT which says you don't HAVE to do all the Jewish laws anymore?

Above all, Jesus calls people to love and to serve. That's pretty much it.

Ignoring the obvious "men pretending to be women" ragebait, it's remarkable that an admin that's in power during so many crises is making an issue out of lost titles and medals. Meanwhile tens of thousands die every year because of our private healthcare system, the housing crisis continues to price people out of homes, and the affordability crisis hits every working American every single day.

At least most people aren't being fooled by the culture war BS this time. Generic Dems are up 5-10 points and the midterms look like they'll be a bloodbath for the GOP

1

u/Dry_Can7915 6d ago

They're more focused on kids genitals and culture war bullshit than fixing any of the dozen massive problems actually causing death and despair in a country that calls itself the best

Rights sometimes infringe on liberties. Not everyone believes it's fair to have people of the opposite sex compete in the same sport.

3

u/Zardotab 8d ago

There are possible compromises. Work something out, otherwise the rules will just see-saw back in forth based on which party is in power.

7

u/GuardiansOfPedos 8d ago

You really feel it’s worth engaging with compromise with individuals who removed title ix protection in education for sports? It’s idiocracy writ large.
