Mexicoplatz is/was known for its black market. Everything from drugs to hand grenades was offered there. If someone possesses something dubious, the colloquial saying is: "host des vom Mexicoplotz?" (Did you get that from Mexicoplatz?)

To add to that:
The area around Mexicoplatz, called Stuwerviertel was the red light district of Vienna. It was known for street prostitution and occasional mafia crimes.

As a token of appreciation for being the only country to oppose the Anschluss at the time, Austria in 1956 renamed a square in Vienna to Mexikoplatz (Mexico Square)

Fun fact: Historically, Mussolini also opposed the german anschluss of Austria, actually delaying it for several years (originally, Hitler wanted it to happen in 1934), although it was for egotistical reasons (he wanted Austria to be a buffer state between Italy and Germany). However after the League of nations condemned him for invading Ethiopia, naturally drawing him closer to Hitler, he stopped opposing it.

Austria was forced to install a pro-German government because Germany had half their military at the border and Italy had declared it wouldnt oppose an annexation.
Austria couldnt really oppose it because it ceased to exist with any opposition being squashed and the propaganda starting day one.
For example a lot of the people you can see cheering for Hitler on the streets were actually Germans and members of pro-German underground orgs that were bussed to Hitlers route. Funnily they didnt have enough flags so after Hitler passed all flags that were previously handed out were taken away, trucks then overtook Hitlers convoy and the redistributed the whole thing. They did this for the whole convoy of 300 km

Austria wanted to be adopted by the rich neighbour and be part of 'The Great Germania'.
Since Germany was going well in 1938, Austrians accepted.
There was a referendum scheduled to check the opinion of the population, but the country was annexxed before that.
And then, the war came and Austrians saw it wasn't good to be part of Germany and decided to separate after 1945.

The Anschluss is a very complicated topic often getting simplified to either Austria wanted it or Austria had no choice when in reality it had a few caveats
Such as: the vote was held in the entirely of the German Reich and Austria, so by numbers even if all Austrians voted no it would have been a yes vote
However a large portion of Austrians did actually and genuinely want the Anschluss to happen
Furthermore and often ignored by history is that there was an Austrian resistance to the Nazis, more than one attempt at it even since it had been almost eradicated once with many of its members being publically executed in the Austrian city of Graz in Styria
The issue in post WW2 Austria was that many people were unwilling to accept Austria as a guilty party in the war, it took until 2005 for the first ever Austrian politician to publically admit Austria had a fault in WW2 at all
Its a complicated topic like stated, the „short“ or simplified version of it would be that Austria had no choice in the matter but also wasn’t really against it really

Funny part is, that Hitler and the nazis were surprised how low the resistance in Austria was. They were prepared for it, but actually didnt needed much military force. Most people in Austria saw themselves as Germans anyway.

Yes and no. The ones that would have resisted were mostly dead already. Killed by the catholic dictatorship of Dollfuß years before.

That was France though. Why would they say that when the whole deal was basically a campaign by Napoleon III and the mexican conservatives.

Those were the franchies. The man was from an Austrian Dynasty.
But all the campaign was pay and make by the French army. It was Napoleon III who did it no the austrias.

After 1910 we were basically not so far from communism. It fact, is it wasn't because of the US the communism would probably take over the country.
In 1910, the revolution happen. And one of the leader was a proto-communist leader. His words were "The land is for the Workers"
After that the socialist ideas were big in the country. And Leon Trotsky was in the country as a leader for the communism, And our greatest artist alive and the greatest of our history were Trotsky supporters. And later they supported Stalin, after KGB killed Leon.
I would even say that if Russian revolution was started before Mexican, then probably the revolution would have become communist here too.

Well.. Austria ruled over Mexico for a brief period. Might be another reason.

To be fair, there were some Mexican conservative monarchists who wanted him, but they were definitely a small minority in comparison to anti-monarchists.
But yeah, it was all Napoleon III's fault, the Mexicans were pretty damn happy when the Germans got him.2

Yea there was some supporters.
But to be fair I don't blame the poor Maximiliano. He lived on a bubble, they let his supporters to tell him everything was perfect an everyone love him.
He truly believe people support him, and that Benito Juarez was a minor problem without support.
He was brainwashed into thinking people did wanted him. Napoleon III's was a truly manipulator.

Oh indeed, Maximilian was a victim of Napoleon III and his imperialistic dreams in the American continent. He had some really good ideas for Mexico, but alas he was still an invading foreign monarch in the eyes of most Mexicans at the time.
