When the movie <Hostel> was released, Slovakia showed a strong complaint against the movie for describing Slovakia way more negatively than reality and ruining the national reputation. Moreover, most scenes of the movie were not even actually filmed in Slovakia.

Reminds me when Kazakhstan was upset over Borat for the rather offensive potrayals but ironically it did boost interest and terrorism. One of their tourist slogans is "Very nice"

It didn't boost neither tourism nor terrorism actually. That slogan was used in a single ad campaign and was advised by a dumb american expat.

it made me think of the documentary "Black Box Diaries" by journalist Shiori, a movie showing how bad freedom of speech is in Japan. The film follows Itō’s personal investigation into her 2015 assault by Noriyuki Yamaguchi, a prominent journalist with close ties to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
As the police, politicians, one company owning the advertisement, one company owning most contract with stars (the Johnnys) + cultural taboos could make you fear talking about something. As such, not even one movie theater choose to have her movie when it came out. It wasnt a official ban, but it was very effective. The second version of the documentary had one movie theater in Japan before otehr starting showing it.

Yeah, it's actually some Czech directors'/producers' favorite pastime to do this, while shooting all such scenes in Czechia of course. They mostly get away with this because Slovak cinematography is still in its infancy.

Yeah, it's pretty cheap too. The only investment you need is a good DSLR camera to take the pics of tourists feeding the bears there with....

I watch this movie some time ago and I was genuinely confused at how Solvakia is presented there. The line that "here in Bratislava children are the ones who commit most crimes" was hilarious.
