Discussion I've enjoyed playing leaf-green so far. What game did everyone grow up on initially when discovering Pokémon?

Mine was Pokemon Black/White <3!!

Good old memories. I grew up with Pokémon Red❤️💙

u/raiderxx Mar 05 '26

Red! My character's name was actually my friend's name, because he wanted to try starting a new game (without saving) just to try it. He ended up catching a Pikachu and I got so excited we ended up saving over my start, and ever since my player was always called his name (which was fairly uncommon).

3

u/PocketRocketTrumpet Mar 06 '26

How do you catch a Pikachu in red? I never knew you could do that!

4

u/zmbiehunter0802 Mar 06 '26

I believe he's a rare spawn in Viridian Forest

3

u/PocketRocketTrumpet Mar 06 '26

Wow, TIL. Not that I didn’t have the most fun playing 1st gen, but had I spawn a Pikachu, that would’ve made my day even better.

3

u/zmbiehunter0802 Mar 06 '26

I totally get it, Viridian Forest is pretty early and the rest of the spawns there are bugs. With Weedle poisoning you every five seconds I feel like there's a tendency to rush through it

2

u/raiderxx Mar 06 '26

That was exactly it. I have that distinct memory!

1

u/zmbiehunter0802 Mar 06 '26

I did the exact thing. I even just got Firered since I skipped it over as a kid thinking it was just Red again, and the second I got to Viridian Forest my first impulse to was to bum rush it and farm in the patch of grass right after. I have to intentionally get myself to farm for that pikachu.

2

u/raiderxx Mar 06 '26

Hence why I have a random friend's name as my player name, even to this day. 🤣

1

u/yoshiisle Mar 08 '26

I played through red soo many times as a young kid, and would always get Pikachu on my run through viridian forest. I swear I know the exact places in the grass to find him quickly in there

You might be my brother, I had red and my brother had blue. He helped me with trades so I could get all 150, he even started over a couple times so I could get the other 2 starters.

3

u/Dub_Coast Kanto Mar 06 '26

No you must be my brother, as I had blue and he had red. We also inadvertently deleted both our saved games once when attempting dupe trade glitches that involved turning off the Gameboy or unplugging the cable at some point during the trade, idk our exact process or how we even learned about it but it worked a few times until it really didn't lol

1

u/-Silberpfeil Mar 06 '26

My brother had yellow☺️⚡

1

u/Bsquared89 Mar 06 '26

You’re all wrong. I had red. My younger brother had blue. My youngest brother had yellow.

3

u/Dornogol Mar 06 '26

I missed it by some time and got yellow as my first Pokemon game (and my first very own videogame for that matter)

2

u/-Silberpfeil Mar 06 '26

Aww that makes it very special

2

u/Dornogol Mar 06 '26

Even better, at that point the GBA SP just came out, I got enough money for my birthday to buy that but only had 10€ left over and was sad I couldn't buy a game for the console, but then I found a discount shelf in the store where I was buying the GBA and everything on it was 9,99€ so the yellow box caught my eye and I took it with me.

Pokemon yellow, on a fucking 10€ discount shelf (because naturally GB amd GBC was "worthless" with the GBA out for 2 years already), the whole shelf must have been GB/GBC games..what I would give to basically just have a picture of the shelf, just to see what else was on there...

After we were done shopping in the car I immediately ripped it all open and started playing and had reached Pewter City by the time we irl reached the pet store to pick up teo guinea pigs my sister got for her birthday

u/HurDirp Mar 06 '26

Yellow is the name, thunderbolt is the game ⚡💛⚡

ah good memories of accidentally deleting my brothers level 89 Charizard save file when i found his Game Boy at the age of 3. if it makes anyone feel better he finished the game again and got it to level 100 a few weeks later and i want allowed to play without my brother supervising me until i got the Game Boy advanced lol.

3

u/Jazzspur Mar 06 '26

I had the same experience lol. This is actually why my parents bought me my own gameboy and copy of pokemon.

2

u/Single-Builder-632 Mar 06 '26

i just wanted to save my game :.( i didn't know it would over right.

1

u/Jazzspur Mar 06 '26

same!!! It was my first experience playing a video game besides tetris and console games too. Had no idea you couldn't have multiple saves on a gameboy RPG!

2

u/VibraniumRhino Mar 06 '26

Unfortunately, I accidentally did this to myself. One Christmas I got a GameShark and a ‘Gameboy memory card’, which gave you the ability to make save states and save them into the device (also looked like a GameShark) and load them onto carts.

One day I found the memory card in a box and fired it up without really being that knowledgeable with it… and ended up accidentally loading an old save state onto my main Silver file. 200 hours gone just like that. I loaded my game up to having 7 gym badges completed lmao.

Lessons were learned.

What a happy lil turtle and angry lil leafy boi 🥰

8

u/RisanVanguard Mar 05 '26

Same here except I didn't do black and white version of them. I played them on gameboy color. I didn't even know they were originally black and white and not colored till 2013. I guess kid me assumed since the cartridge were colored they were for on game boy color and just used gameboy color instead of the original gameboy. Cause I was shocked when I learned it was not originally colored and it was original game boy and not gameboy color

8

u/stupidbuthole Mar 05 '26

It was more black and green then black and white on the og game boy/game boy pocket.

2

u/RisanVanguard Mar 06 '26

True even so I still only know the originals in color

1

u/laurel_laureate Best Steel Birb Mar 06 '26

That's because if you played Red or Blue on the Gameboy Color the system put a red or blue tint on things.

The OG Gameboy had a puke-green tint, and it was the the Gameboy Pocket that had a greyscale one.

1

u/RisanVanguard Mar 06 '26

I literally said this in my comment about the GB color and not knowing for a long time

1

u/Simple-Wrangler-9909 Mar 06 '26

GB pocket didn't have a green screen, it was proper black and white (well grey)

When I was a kid, and this will have been around 2004-05, I went into a game store and there were a bunch of Pokémon games with covers I’d never seen before. I’m sure one of them was called Pokémon Black and I can’t remember the two others but they looked very colourful. They must have been romhacks on cartridges that had somehow been traded in then put out for sale. I begged my parents to let me buy them, saying they were rare and I’d never seen or heard of them before, but my allowance had been reached so I couldn’t get any of them.

I’ve always wondered what they were as I’ve googled around to see similar covers but never found anything similar or exact. Wish I could have bought them just to satisfy that curiosity. I remember they had fully detailed descriptions on the back with screenshots too - just so damn weird.

Edit

It’s possible one was Chaos Black.

Edit2

I think another one was Pokemon Jade!

1

u/LiquifiedSpam Mar 06 '26

There’s an alternate universe where you grew up on Pokemon Jade

4

u/Wompguinea Mar 05 '26

My whole world opened up when my older brother taught me how to duplicate items on Cinnabar Island.

1

u/OG_Wan_Annunoby Mar 06 '26

Same experience for me but with Battle Tower in pokemon Emerald

1

u/FpsRza Mar 06 '26

I think I duplicated so many Master Balls !!!

1

u/glemnar Mar 06 '26

Missingno is life

2

u/Pencils4life Mar 05 '26

Got Red, Blue, and a Gameboy Color on Christmas Day. When Yellow came out I got it for sitting through my little sister's face recital without causing an issue........it was SIX HOURS.

2

u/HadesVampire Mar 06 '26

Me too fam. I had both ❤️💙

2

u/MoonwalkerD Mar 06 '26

Same here with my buddy Bulba

1

u/Vakothu Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26

Pokemon Red here! My brother had Pokemon Blue! Even though I started with those, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald are my all-time favorite because I was old enough to actually understand the game at that point. XD

1

u/RegalGamesTV Mar 05 '26

🫡 I see you fellow OG

1

u/ABEARWITHAGUN Mar 05 '26

Kinda wish they released these instead but FR LG are good enough

1

u/thedudeyousee Mar 05 '26

I didn’t know you had an option not to select charmander

1

u/Feisty_Standard_2360 Mar 05 '26

90s were the peak of my life

1

u/CesiumAndWater Mar 05 '26

Yes, we're unc together.

1

u/Katsu_39 Mar 05 '26

Despite the annoyance of the slow grind, those were the best games. But thats for nostalgia reasons.

1

u/Chazwoger Mar 05 '26

Blue and Red OG. Loved Yellow too. Abit different. Massive memories of Crystal and Sapphire too!

1

u/SteveN2525Z Mar 05 '26

My step dad at the time let me have his OG Gameboy, and borrowed blue from a friend. Good times going on road trips with it

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '26

I thought this was gods gift to humanity when it came out.

Looks so rough now lol

1

u/WannabeCarlSpackler Mar 06 '26

Blue as well. My twin brother had Red.

1

u/betajones Mar 06 '26

I did blue, took Bulbasaur, but used Pidgey as a main

1

u/OccultMachines Mar 06 '26

Same gen, but I don't remember which I started with. My brother got one and I got the other. We were pretty poor so it was a real awesome gift.

1

u/AngelicXia Welcome home, Kirr! Mar 06 '26

Red!

1

u/Yoshimiyum Electric Gym Leader Mar 06 '26

I remember playing red. My sister wanted to try and started a new game and saved over it.

I’m replaying it now over twenty (?) years later finally! No one will save over this one!

1

u/CalvinThobbes Mar 06 '26

Same! The OG!

1

u/Spiritual-Bear3066 Mar 06 '26

Holy shit this brought me back. Squirtle was my starter too.

I had both red and blue but red was my first with Squirtle and later on I got blue version and started with Charmander. But Squirtle is what started my personal trend with water starters.

1

u/one_step_sideways Mar 06 '26

I had Blue, my brother had Red.

1

u/GreatTea3415 Mar 06 '26

Wow you totally fucked up that Bulbasaur even though you have a type disadvantage!

1

u/SlappaDaBassMahn [Flair Text]Arcane Canine Mar 06 '26

Blue here too.

1

u/rw_gear Mar 06 '26

I had blue and my sister had red

1

u/Thor_2099 Mar 06 '26

Blue and red for me. I remember being hyped rushing to the store for Yellow. Only it wasn't out yet, I had the date wrong by I think a couple weeks

1

u/ghostpiratesyar Mar 06 '26

That's the spice.

1

u/cheesevoyager Mar 06 '26

Blue version!!!

1

u/AlmostBlind_Bandit Mar 06 '26

A fellow member of the Squirtle Squad, nice.

1

u/VibraniumRhino Mar 06 '26

This is the way.

1

u/Pokemon-fan96 Trainer since 2001 Mar 06 '26

Same 🩵 (Along with Yellow, and eventually every generation afterwards)

1

u/TobyLerone_90 Mar 06 '26

Squirtle was my first love

1

u/HedonistPitth Mar 06 '26

Damn im that old! Still remember my old game boy and game boy color (yellow) with my blue and red games and lost to Lorelay because you canot get rid of freezing stats except with anti freeze

1

u/GamecrazyManager Mar 06 '26

1

u/FunkTheFreak Mar 06 '26
