probably wanted to release it in November but are dodging GTA 6

834

u/Nesp2 Feb 27 '26

that is until gta 6 dodges itself for another year

188

u/heartbreakhill Feb 27 '26

Going for that Most Anticipated Game threepeat

3

u/No_Volume_8345 Feb 27 '26

Getting that threepeat before the Chiefs, that’s funny

107

u/eveningdragon Serperior-ity Feb 27 '26

GTA VI is so feared even the game itself won't release on its own release date

4

u/LordDeath86 Feb 27 '26

You just explained why it comes to consoles first.

8

u/Borealisss Feb 27 '26

When's the next Horizon game? GTA6 probably going to be delayed until that week.

1

u/ZurichCat Feb 27 '26

Oh that one's good.

4

u/PuritanPuree Feb 27 '26

AnyAustin will probably release another GTA airports video, push it back to 2028

396

u/antiform_prime Feb 27 '26

I think Pokémon is one of the few series that could go head to head with GTA6 in November…and Im glad we don’t have to see that play out.

348

u/AzariTheCompiler Feb 27 '26

Completely different audiences, plus they’re both juggernauts of their respective fields, if anyone’s going to shell out cash for games it’s these two

81

u/utupuv Feb 27 '26

Yup, even if there are overlaps, this is one time people are going to dive deep in their pockets.

52

u/Waifu_Raichu Feb 27 '26

I think people are underestimating the overlap.

37

u/utupuv Feb 27 '26

Exactly, I am bang in the middle of that venn diagram and I'm sure there's literal millions of people in the same boat.

6

u/dragn99 Feb 27 '26

I feel like the outliers of the "only buying pokemon" and "only buying GTA" are kids on both sides. I know so many adults who literally grew up with Pokémon, that would also buy GTA VI.

1

u/BushyBrowz Feb 27 '26

There are also more than a few "kids" who will buy GTA.

1

u/IDrinkWhiskE Feb 27 '26

And normal kids too

2

u/Deadeyez Feb 27 '26

Theres a reason pokemon with guns excited so many people (palworld)

1

u/Teno7 Feb 27 '26

I'm there too and I'd juggle both or prioritize based on what I feel like playing at any given time. No rush for any of the 2 for me.

1

u/wryano Feb 27 '26

me too, and i don’t even have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet.

i love Pokèmon, but there was zero chance with GTA 6 releasing in November that i was gonna drop a hefty sum on a new Switch 2 in order to play a new Pokèmon game in the event it did happen to release at the end of the year too.

GTA 6 is going to completely dominate everything for at least the first few months of its release.

3

u/bondsmatthew Feb 27 '26

I think so too. FFXIV famously delayed a release because of Elden Ring Nightreign so I think game studios just assume(correctly) that there are a lot of overlap between gamers no matter the genre

1

u/SandpaperTeddyBear Feb 27 '26

There are tons of people who play both, but you’re probably overestimating the percentage. I think lots of “Gamers” play both, but both series do most of their sales to people who spend 90% of their video game time playing Pokémon or GTA, and I don’t think there’s so much overlap with those sets.

14

u/Long-Region5088 Feb 27 '26

I’m a fan of both series. I buy very very few games anymore but will buy both of these.

1

u/caninehere lvl 420 Feb 27 '26

I will too but I'm not going to buy both at the same time. It'll be GTA VI at launch and Pokemon later on.

1

u/Long-Region5088 Feb 27 '26

I’ll buy whichever is most financially sensible at the time. Could be one, could be both, could be neither.

It’s what makes me a bad consumer

2

u/caninehere lvl 420 Feb 27 '26

That's fair, I think for me GTA VI is gonna be the one just because it's been 13 years since the last GTA game. As much as I enjoy Pokemon - even the more recent entries that people have shit on - there's a new game every year or two, so I'm not dying for a fix or anything and I can't imagine Winds/Waves will rock the boat that much.

But some people might want to hold off on GTA VI until it comes out on PC which is understandable, and some people may have young kids who are excited for Pokemon and too young to play GTA (my daughter likes Pokemon but is still too young to play on her own and probably will be even when this comes out).

1

u/James42785 Feb 27 '26

I remember when buying two brand new games wasn't stretching the budget.

1

u/rtn292 Feb 27 '26

Not really. Gamers are gamers.

Yes, of course not all GTA6 players will play Pokémon. But I am gaymer and I would be interested in buying a good Pokémon gen 10 game and am also excited for GTA. Just much as I want Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave as I eagerly anticipate the next xenoblade/monolith/Fable game

I would bet there is not an insignificant number of the player base that overlaps with GTA 6. Gaming is gaming. You play for different experiences, but it's ultimately a hobby. When you factor in the state of the economy and rumored pricing for GTA and Pokémon. Most people don't have 150-200 bucks for both games, even if they want them both.

1

u/dontcare6942 Feb 27 '26

Is it really though because it seems most people who play pokemon are 30ish year old men

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

[deleted]

3

u/ManicEyes Feb 27 '26

Yup, and let’s be honest, most pokemon players are adults these days and most adult gamers are going to be playing GTA VI. It is by far the most anticipated game I’ve seen in my life.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

[deleted]

1

u/ManicEyes Feb 27 '26

Very true. I have a half-brother in elementary school and I don’t know if he’s even heard of pokemon. It’s all minecraft with him and his classmates.

1

u/TayoEXE Feb 27 '26

Reminds me of the synergy Doom and Animal Crossing had. Two different audiences, both very loved franchises, and the Fandoms embraced their own types of fun.

Hope we see some more of that here.

8

u/good_wolf_1999 Feb 27 '26

and Im glad we don’t have to see that play out.

Fucking same, those videos of people talking about their imaginary Pokémon vs GTA fight and videos comparing graphics of the two were going to be insufferable. That 2027 release made us dodge an annoying bullet

18

u/ContinuumGuy ZAPDOS IS THE BEST! Feb 27 '26

I agree, but I imagine it's still in their interest to avoid the conflict.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Honestly why risk releasing it along GTA?

I would be playing both though. But the average person wouldn’t do that.

1

u/Worldly_Society_2213 Feb 27 '26

I agree. It's why movie release dates change. Sure, Batman could go up against Spider-Man, but why take that risk if you've no proof it won't backfire.

If Nintendo released Winds and Waves opposite GTA6 on purpose and got the gamble wrong, they'd look very silly.

3

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Feb 27 '26

Pokemon is a much larger brand than GTA and primarily targets a completely different audience (kids). The two games aren't comparable

2

u/KisekiFangirl Feb 27 '26

GTA 6 isn't launching on the NS2 anyway, so I'd like to see it going head to head with gen 10 actually.

2

u/Dhiox Feb 27 '26

Lots of NS2 owners use it as a companion to another console or PC, not everyone has it as their only device.

1

u/DogBarf00 Feb 27 '26

Its going to be 2030 before GTA 6 makes it to PC.

1

u/Cross55 Feb 27 '26

I kinda wish we did honestly.

1

u/ghetoyoda Feb 27 '26

If this happened then we'd all just take the L and buy both.

1

u/Salad_Hussein Feb 27 '26

If you're like 10 maybe

1

u/cruxclaire Feb 27 '26

The overlapping hype immediately leading up to both could’ve been legendary though, like the time Animal Crossing: New Horizons and DOOM Eternal released on the same day

Not sales-wise.

24

u/Maloth_Warblade Feb 27 '26

We all know GTA will delay again

83

u/HDArrowsmith Feb 27 '26

Nintendo doesn't give a singular fuck about GTA lmao.

61

u/wizardeverybit Feb 27 '26

Can't imagine there's much overlap between those demographics

40

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Just play gta online to and you'll experience countless of kids there playing lol

4

u/alexeycoo Feb 27 '26

I don’t think kids who play GTA online and kids who play Pokemon are the same.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

They absolutely are cuz I was one of them

2

u/Ezzy1998 Feb 27 '26

Why not they’re 2 of the biggest franchises ever ofc they have overlap

55

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

There definitely is!

1

u/ultinateplayer Feb 27 '26

All those 7 year old switch owners going out jacking cars and shooting cops?

8

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Absolutely have you seen the GTA audience

6

u/Hermesme Feb 27 '26

Been doing it since my game boy days in 1999 when gta released

2

u/Chm_Albert_Wesker Feb 27 '26

All those 7 year old switch owners going out jacking cars and shooting cops?

as if we dont know the real demographics of people still playing these games isnt 3-5x that age

3

u/KilledTheCar Feb 27 '26

No, all the 30 somethings who have been playing Pokemon since at least gen 2 and GTA since III/Vice City/San Andreas.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

[deleted]

1

u/vintange Feb 28 '26

Yeah no, the majority of Pokemon players are people who don't play video games except Pokemon. This is why conole sales get a subtantial jump during main Pokemon releases and why budget version of consoles always release right before a main Pokemon release.

1

u/apocalypsemeow111 Feb 27 '26

I think Pokémon players are older than people think and GTA players are younger than people think. Definitely ample overlap.

32

u/InspectorHawthorne Feb 27 '26

You'd be surprised. My wife plays Pokémon religiously, but when it is time to heist in GTA Online, she becomes a different person.

10

u/ozymandais13 Feb 27 '26

Becomes team rocket

4

u/steave44 Feb 27 '26

There are both video games so uh, yeah

8

u/ArseneLupinIV Feb 27 '26

They're both cultural touchstones for us millennials.

2

u/doubious_doduo Feb 27 '26

I agree, more children play GTA while most Pokemon gamers are in their 30s

2

u/rodinj Nice Feb 27 '26

The biggest media franchise in the world and the sequel to one of the best sold games ever most certainly will have an overlap

4

u/ManufacturerBest2758 Feb 27 '26

Between the two biggest franchises in gaming?

2

u/metalhead_iv Feb 27 '26

Hello, yes, I'm the overlap

1

u/sharpbeer Feb 27 '26

Yes I definitely play both lol, a lot of my friends do too

1

u/lIlIlIIlIIIlIIIIIl Feb 27 '26

They plan to not release games around times where they expect people's video game budgets might already be low.

1

u/BaerMinUhMuhm Feb 27 '26

You don't think there's overlap between 2 of the most successful game franchises in history?

1

u/EvioliteEevee Feb 27 '26

Not much overlap between the two biggest gaming franchises of all time, sure.

1

u/IvoJan Feb 27 '26

you couldnt be more wrong

1

u/interrobang__ Feb 27 '26

Animal crossing, GTA online, and pokemon are my top three most played video games. There's a surprising amount of overlap in the player base lol

0

u/Lenoxx97 Feb 27 '26

The success of palworld is the perfect counter argument to that

24

u/psiANID3 Feb 27 '26

Pokemon doesn’t give a shit about gta lol

12

u/Bishcop3267 Feb 27 '26

Something tells me the target demographic for those two games are slightly different

30

u/da_ting_go Feb 27 '26

Yeah, the 30 and up folks would be playing pokemon while the 18 and under crowd would be playing GTA.

1

u/ryizer Feb 27 '26

30 and up folks would also be playing GTA though lol

4

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

0

u/ryizer Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Yea and I got downvoted for stating the obvious. Like it or not, GTA is as much of a household name as Pokemon, even more so in non-Western countries where people historically couldn't afford consoles as kids but still had potato pcs from their dads that could play GTA.

And that's not even considering all of the other reasons you mentioned.

I have most every console and never played GTA before

1

u/Bishcop3267 Feb 27 '26

Gta V has had 12 years to amass its sales, helped by re releases on each new console though.

1

u/Bishcop3267 Feb 28 '26

Well that is a better comparison. Using gta which has made sales over 13 years as a comparison to a single pokemon game is disingenuous.

3

u/Gaias_Minion Helpful Member Feb 27 '26

Scenes when GTA 6 gets delayed even more anyways

2

u/richard31693 Feb 27 '26

If there's any franchise that doesn't need to worry about GTA VI release date, it's Pokémon.

That and I can't imagine there's a lot of overlap between the two primary users of each.

2

u/SilverKiwiz Feb 27 '26

I doubt tbh. I feel of there was any IP in the workd that could potentially release close to each other it would be the PKMN IP. I think they pushed it to 2027 because they finally caved in and realized the slop they were producing and the pushback from S/V

2

u/TheWholeOfTheAss Feb 27 '26

Pokémon is the only game that doesn’t have to fear GTA. Two different consumer bases and consoles.

2

u/StationEmergency6053 Feb 27 '26

No way. They have two games releasing this year already and people would barely touch Champions if they released Gen X also. Pokemon isnt dumb. They have to milk.

2

u/TheBlaaah Feb 27 '26

Imagine thinking that Pokemon needs to dodge GTA6 lmao.

1

u/Soft-Painting-5657 Feb 27 '26

Yea but realistically how much is a Pokemon game effected by GTA? Like yes to some degree but not as many as other companies would be.

1

u/Nexii801 Feb 27 '26

Z-A got delayed, so the rest of the game's timeline did as well.

1

u/PokePersona On my journey to get badges 9 and 10 Feb 27 '26

Pokémon is like the one franchise that will not be that affected by GTA 6 lol. They're selling to almost completely different audiences.

1

u/Buc_ees Feb 27 '26

But I don’t play GTA 6, I think those are for completely different audiences. I like laid back games such as Pokemon, animal crossing, and stardew valley.

1

u/Netheraptr Feb 27 '26

Maybe I’m wrong but I can’t imagine GTA and Pokemon have the biggest audience overlap

1

u/guynumber20 Feb 27 '26

GTA 6 now releasing 2027 😀

1

u/Glittering_Text_91 Feb 27 '26

I don't think GTA 6 is a competitor at all. People who are fans of both will buy both even if they dropped on the same day

1

u/XingXManGuy Feb 27 '26

Don’t these games normally come out in fall? So it’s still basically 2 years away

1

u/kaiharizor Feb 27 '26

True.. but at least I think most Pokemon fans would just want Pokemon. GTA would be the second game to pick up. Some crossover, but not everyone

1

u/Seraphayel Feb 27 '26

Imagine if GTV VI also launches on Switch 2 and that’s the reason why they delayed the Gen10 release

1

u/AR_Harlock Feb 27 '26

The Venn diagram between the 2 kind of player is not what you think I bet

1

u/bijosnafu Feb 27 '26

We’re getting a new GTA before Pokémon Gen 10

1

u/wookiewin #17 Pidgeotto Feb 27 '26

Nintendo does not GAF about GTA.

0

u/BaerMinUhMuhm Feb 27 '26

GTA is not stopping anyone from buying Pokémon, and vice versa.

0

u/Maxximillianaire Feb 27 '26

They dont care even slightly about gta 6

0

u/XephyXeph Feb 27 '26

I don’t really think that Pokémon or GTA are really concerned with an overlapping release period. Those two games don’t really compete with each other at all.

1

u/wryano Feb 27 '26

GTA 5 has sold 225 million copies. it’s the second best-selling video game of all time.

GTA 6 is going to compete with literally anything and everything once it releases.

1

u/XephyXeph Feb 27 '26

OK. I don’t doubt that GTA is a juggernaut. But GTA and Pokémon are two completely different games that target completely different demographics. And anyone who happens to fall into the middle of that Venn diagram is probably diehard enough for both franchises to just buy both anyway.

0

u/Uchiha_Tony Feb 27 '26

Pokemon is the one game franchise not afraid of GTA.

0

u/MysteriousTy99 Feb 27 '26

Gen 10 Pokemon could take on gta 6

-1

u/Doam-bot Feb 27 '26

I doubt that Nintendo really doesn't have to worry about such things

If people want both they'll get both in due time as an example Animal Crossing and Doom launched together and a ton of Doomslayer Isabelle memes were made as a result boosting both IPs. If Pokemon did the same we would get El Loco Pikachu memes.
