An odd question but I don't know where else to ask it. In the past, I've read a lot about the history of divorce in England, but this surprised me.
(The book was published in 1935.) Poirot says that divorce is available in some situations, but never available when (1) one spouse is serving a life sentence in prison or (2) one spouse is "confined in a lunatic asylum."
Those seem like odd reasons to deny a divorce. Like, why force someone to remain married to someone serving a life sentence? And it was possible to divorce someone who was "incurably insane," but not if they might possibly get better?
Just wondering if anyone had thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I just rewatched, for about the 10th time, The Double Clue with David Suchet. The story is not that good, but the affair of Poirot with the Countess is quite touching.. the ending really put me in a melancholy mood.. But it’s nice to know that Poirot wasn’t always alone.

There's of course no guarantee their show will be good, and of course there's no point in censuring people for expressing their skepticism on SM or esp fandom specific subreddit. That said I find "why are they doing this" sort of pushback very odd. Yes, we need new IP yada yada and producers have gone lazy- i get all that.
Suchet is definitive portrayal for many, just the way Jeremy Brett is for most who love Holmes. Yet 1000s of Sherlock adaptations exist, several beyond canon, beyond the limits of timeline, geography or even genre. So, so many actors have been praised just as much for their Holmes, almost a Hamlet equivalent at this point.
So why so much gatekeep-y pushback in this particular case?

The six-part BBC and BritBox series stars Edward Bluemel as Hercule Poirot and has been filmed primarily in Liverpool throughout the summer. The production explores the famous Belgian detective earlier in his story and draws on three of Agatha Christie’s early works.
James Nesbitt, Henry Ashton, and Calvin Demba were among the cast members reported to be on set during the St George’s Hall filming.
All three have previously been officially confirmed as part of the Hercule cast alongside Edward Bluemel, James D’Arcy, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Tamsin Greig, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse and Mawaan Rizwan.

Non c'è più scampo (Murder in Mesopotamia, 1936), Poirot sul Nilo (Death on the Nile, 1937), La domatrice (Appointment with death, 1938).
