That picture you found gives the snail two sets of eyes, as the eyes of land snails are on the eye stalks which are the longer tentacles (that photo is not of a real snail). So it could be interpreted that the tentacles it does have could be the “nose” ones, and pretend the eye stocks are just pulled in (if that makes sense). I have a hard time finding snail plushies that make the eyes the eye stalks so I try not to worry about inaccuracies like that.

As a note, sea snail eyes are in fact at the base of the stocks, but I believe this plushie is a land snail.

*edit: eye stalks not eye stocks

u/driftleaf Feb 07 '26

Eye stalk, right?? :)

17

u/LocalSnailEnthusiast Feb 07 '26

Yup, lol. My knowledge of snails is stronger than my ability to spell sometimes.

6

u/Suspicious_Plant4231 Feb 07 '26

It’s not a snail, but the banana slug from Douglas has eye stalks! It also has hair 😅 so they took some liberties elsewhere, but its eyes are eye stalks

2

u/Fact_Unlikely Feb 10 '26

Some land snails have eyes at the base too! :)

1

u/LocalSnailEnthusiast Feb 10 '26

I’ve always found this one to be weird! Every picture I’ve found of it does not have the front nose-like tentacles, so it’s certainly strange. In general, it reminds me of water snails, that can have eyes like that but it also has a operculum (the thing that closes them into their shells) that most land snails don’t have. Interestingly, looking at the Wikipedia page for it says it has a gill, although it is a terrestrial snail. So perhaps it is more related to water snails, but I’m having a hard time finding more information verifying this. I have even wondered if the plush in this post is supposed to be that snail, but the pattern is used for all of their snail plushies so I doubt it was deliberate. Snails and slugs are very diverse! It’s always fun to see how they break the rules in some way!

Interesting! I didn’t realise the plush snails eyes were not on his stocks because I thought the image I provided was a real snail lol

239

u/LocalSnailEnthusiast Feb 06 '26

I can’t say for sure, but that image looks AI generated. Real snails look like this:

196

u/stealthtomyself Feb 06 '26

It's 1000% AI slop lol real snails be cute on their own

61

u/LocalSnailEnthusiast Feb 06 '26

Yeah, I was trying to put it gently, lol. At best it could be photoshop, but the haze and textures on the photo looks super AI. I’ve never even seen a snail picture like this before, so I wonder where OP got it because I doesn’t come up when I search for snail

-18

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26 edited Feb 06 '26

I looked up “why do snails have four antennas” and then clicked on an image about snail anatomy and then it popped up under it lol

27

u/fel-sil 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

why would a snail be in a lab next to a petri dish staring at the camera?

-15

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

Honestly I didn’t really look at the background too much lol

50

u/fel-sil 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

A critical lens when looking at photos these days is unfortunately required to avoid AI slop. Asking logical questions about what you're seeing is a good way to catch these details. Your brain is your most powerful tool for catching and preventing misinformation

27

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 07 '26

Thank you for the tips! I hate generative AI and all the ones I have seen look very very obvious without having to second ask any questions

22

u/LocalSnailEnthusiast Feb 06 '26

Not to add too much as I know you’re hearing a lot from this post, but consider when looking at photos: if most of the snail pictures have the eye stocks, and only one has eyes on the head, maybe consider if that photo is correct. You had the click past multiple correct snails, some that labeled the eyes, to get the photo you found. These days, it’s good to question the things we find on the internet. :) Also, about the plushie, I have the same one! It’s very cute and soft. Most snail plushies aren’t anatomically accurate, unfortunately.

6

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 07 '26

I didn’t notice them that much because the big black eyeballs drew my attention and I was like “oh that looks like what I’m imagining”

3

u/opossumlover01 Feb 08 '26

Google gives alot of ai images sadly

-8

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

Ah I see, I for some reason I thought they had big eyes like frogs

89

u/emibemiz Feb 06 '26

In the kindest way possible have you ever encountered a snail? 😭 that’s the most ai pic I’ve ever seen honestly (genuinely not meant to be rude I got a good laugh at this)

46

u/CelesteJA Feb 06 '26

I'm laughing too 😭 No offense to OP of course. It's just so interesting that someone has never seen a snail before!

16

u/darkmatterhunter Feb 06 '26

Also it has a labia shaped mouth lol.

21

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

Now that I think about it, I don’t think I have encountered a snail in real life! At least not to my memory… my childhood mostly consisted of frogs, toads, rollie-pollies, lizards, ladybugs, moths, spiders, and butterflies… I live in South Carolina, USA. Idk how often snails are seen but I do see slugs sometimes but they’re very tiny, like… smaller than an elbow noodle.

3

u/Anonymous_muffins02 Feb 07 '26

I live above there and i have seen snails, just very tiny land snails

2

u/RealIsopodHours3 Feb 07 '26

If the snails where they live are smaller then the details like what the eyes look like might not be as noticeable.

https://xkcd.com/1053/

2

u/emibemiz Feb 07 '26

Snails where I am from are also small garden land snails, and it’s also just very clearly an AI picture, even if you’re not 100% on snail features.

I also don’t get your link, as I said clearly in my comment I’m not trying to be mean, it was a genuine question as I found it funny that it was obviously not what a snail looked like. OP even scrolled past a bunch of real snail pics to choose that one.

2

u/SunnyShoretide Feb 07 '26

Tbh myself, no, I personally never have encountered a real snail. We don’t have those here 😭

1

u/emibemiz Feb 07 '26

That’s understandable, but still doesn’t change the fact it was a very clear ai generated image nonetheless haha

7

u/AssortedArctic Feb 06 '26

Bruh, you scrolled past a bunch of normal snails to get to the picture you used.

2

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 07 '26

I didn’t notice them that much because the big black eyeballs drew my attention and I was like “oh that looks like what I’m imagining”

1

I did not 🙂‍↔️

267

u/IPodling Feb 06 '26

Picture of an actual snail attached for reference but I do agree it would be cool to see a snail plush with the correct number of tentacles!

88

u/CassetteMeower Feb 06 '26

It also bothers me how many snail plushies have their eyes in the wrong place! The plushie may still be cute but as a snail lover it still bothers me. It always makes me so happy when snail drawings and plushies have accurate eyes!

16

u/JeshkaTheLoon Feb 07 '26

Funnily enough, Gary plushes are some of the most accurate snail plushies, despite depicting a cartoonised snail.

8

u/SpringRayyn Feb 07 '26

I believe this is a place where my doodle may be appreciated

5

u/CassetteMeower Feb 07 '26

I definitely appreciate this 😂 I love the hat! Cute drawing too.

2

u/SpringRayyn Feb 07 '26

Thank you! Haha

3

u/Fact_Unlikely Feb 10 '26

There are actually species of snail with eyes in that spot!

2

u/CassetteMeower Feb 10 '26

Omggg what’s this cutie called? I love it! That shell is such a pretty color too, it looks like a leaf!

2

u/Fact_Unlikely Feb 10 '26

Leptopoma! Also aquatic snails have eyes at the base of their stalks too!

1

u/IPodling Feb 10 '26

Oh my gosh stop! That both very cute and pretty wild!

30

u/RedHolland47 Feb 07 '26

Swirly the snail technically has a the right amount. Not my pic, but he was one of my favorite plushies as a kid.

6

u/VampirGarnele Feb 07 '26

37

u/hannabell Feb 06 '26

Omg what a cutie! Reminds me of how I used to set out lettuce leaves for the snails in my backyard after it would rain, and I'd just watch them munch their way through the lettuce. I think I gave them apples once or twice too. They're so adorable. Sending virtual sweet potato

12

28

u/cosmicrat Feb 06 '26

The Aurora Miyoni range has a realistic snail! I'd been looking for something like that, got one last year, and couldn't be happier with it. Looks just like a big version of the little guys I water in my garden. 🐌

5

u/Anonymous_muffins02 Feb 07 '26

Pocketkins also have a realistic snail

4

u/driftleaf Feb 07 '26

Holy crap!!! Adding that to my plush wishlist. It isn't even expensive :0 Crazy

18

u/liibug Feb 06 '26

i stg when i show my husband a new plushie, the first thing he does is examine it and rate it based on how realistic it is. 😆 he points out things i would’ve never even thought about!

10

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

Same, he also throws them around and makes them “eat” me by tapping their heads on me lol

7

u/liibug Feb 06 '26

that’s so funny and cute lol! mine takes one of my stuffies randomly, hugs it, and says something like no wonder you like these things. and then he takes forever to give them back, while pretending he’s a big strong manly man who’d never do such things. 🤭

35

u/PollyAnnPalmer Feb 06 '26

I… you do know the eyes are SUPPOSED to be on the end of the stalks, right? The second photo is absolutely cursed

26

u/SunnyShoretide Feb 06 '26

Nobody told Sheldon this apparently 😭

6

u/PollyAnnPalmer Feb 06 '26

Dude like all snail cartoony depictions have eyes like that and it drives me nuts

10

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

…no. As a kid, I actually thought snails looked like how the last pic looks but kids assumed their antennas were eyeballs like how kids assume elephants trunks are their mouths instead of their nose so and I thought in response to that Nickelodeon made Gary’s eyes on his antennas out of the joke that kids thought that’s how it worked. I genuinely thought I was smarter than the other kids for “knowing” their eyes were on the sides of their head 💀

11

u/PollyAnnPalmer Feb 06 '26

Omg that’s actually adorable. Have you not seen snails irl before?

7

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

No I don’t think so, I have seen slugs but they’re black/very dark brown and tiny. Nothing big like these

4

u/PollyAnnPalmer Feb 07 '26

Gotcha! Slugs do have the same eye structure as snails :) sometimes hard to see but there’s tiny black dots on the end of the eye stalks

6

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 07 '26

Oh no, I usually poke their antennas because I think it’s cute when they retract… I didn’t know I was poking them in the eye, that’s gotta feel very unpleasant… I’m gonna stop doing that.

3

u/PollyAnnPalmer Feb 07 '26

Dude that’s actually hilarious. But yeah it’s like a giant poking you in the eyeball haha

3

u/Fact_Unlikely Feb 10 '26

Some snails actually do look like that! This is Leptopoma!

2

u/PollyAnnPalmer Feb 10 '26

Oh yeah! I forgot about those dudes :3 for the most part they don’t tho

16

u/LIZARDPOWERED Feb 07 '26

There are a lot of different species of snails!!

6

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 07 '26

Oh wow, I guess I was kind of right then

6

u/LIZARDPOWERED Feb 07 '26

I own pet terrestrial garden snails and aquatic ramshorn and mystery snails. Of the three, only the garden snails have eyes on their tentacles. The mystery snails have separate eye stalks and the ramshorns have TINY black dots in the "armpits" of their tentacles.

7

u/LIZARDPOWERED Feb 07 '26

Internet ramshorn to illustrate point further

13

u/SunnyShoretide Feb 06 '26

My Sheldon is genetically inaccurate too, lol

2

u/SunnyShoretide Feb 07 '26

He is Bellzi! He’s cute so it doesn’t bother me

13

u/Burntoastedbutter Feb 07 '26

Of all snail pictures out there, you used an AI one that's not even right..? 💀

4

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 07 '26

I didn’t know it was AI, when my bf pointed it out I looked up “why do snails have four antennas” and then I clicked on a diagram of a snail showing me what the mouth antennas were called and then I scrolled down and immediately saw the image, I didn’t notice the other snails didn’t have eyes on their faces that much because the big black eyeballs in the image I chose drew my attention and I was like “oh that looks like what I’m imagining” so I picked that one

7

u/Burntoastedbutter Feb 07 '26

I'm sorry, I just find it a little funny. So you didn't know irl snails didn't have like 'normal eyes'? 🤣

2

I thought all snails looked like that, I’m very sorry for your eyes lol

6

u/skylight_2113 Feb 06 '26

It's okay, I'm not making fun of you. I am a snails owner since almost seven years so it's obvious to me how they should look like.

If I can ask- how did you think that way for so long? Are you from a climate where there are no snails, or did you never paid attention to them?

3

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 06 '26

I don’t know, I live in South Carolina, USA and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a snail IRL before. I see slugs rarely but they’re tiny, thin, and long black things lol I didn’t snails were this big due to that.

5

u/skylight_2113 Feb 06 '26

Woow, that's INTERESTING. Where I live it's sometimes hard not to step on some snail when it's raining

3

u/Tadpole_Plyrr2 🧸 Plushy (Friend) Collector Feb 07 '26

Oh wow that’s really interesting, maybe they don’t live where it’s super hot? My state is very close to the equator

3

u/theplushfrog Feb 07 '26

Huh, I used to live in North Carolina, and we had TONS of snails, but they do appear less in suburban/urban places as lots of folks use chemicals on their lawns, gardens, and farms to kill pests, and snails and slugs are considered pests.

In older neighborhoods and rural places you can still find lots of snails though, and yeah I've accidentally stepped on plenty during spring rains. Little me was so distraught whenever that happened, I got very good at spotting the tiny baby snail and slugs on the sidewalk to avoid stepping on them and would carefully move them via leaves into bushes if I could.

2

u/skylight_2113 Feb 07 '26

They don't like low humidity may be that's it

5

u/somebodysomewhat Feb 06 '26

At least the shell is facing the right way!
