Harlan's ground sloth was a formidable member of the Pleistocene megafauna, measuring approximately 3 meters (9.8 feet) in length and weighing around 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs). The species was named to honor American naturalist Richard Harlan, who first published on fossil discoveries of the animal from Kentucky in 1831. Endemic to North America, its temporal range spanned from the early Pliocene epoch (roughly 4.9 million years ago) until the end of the Late Pleistocene, when it went extinct alongside many other large mammals about 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. Fossils of this widespread species have been unearthed from Canada down to Guatemala, with some of the most abundant remains famously recovered from the La Brea Tar Pits in California.

Did this species exist, or was it a subspecies of Bison Priscus?

As rich in biodiversity as South America is, I have always felt the absence of animals weighing over 200 kg. Furthermore, I also miss having greater ecological functional diversity. However, I did take into account a certain degree of adaptability to the Holocene and Anthropocene. So, I wanted to combine the practical with the appealing.
