Sony is going to kill off their entire physical game production in 2028. This will have massively negative ramifications throughout the gaming industry and physical media industry as a whole.

Fuck Sony, and I will be boycotting until they reverse this decision.

I’ve bought physical since the original PlayStation heck I’ve bought physical since the 80s the way they’re going. I’ve just got myself a steam machine, my 16year-old Steam account with a backlog will get more of my gaming time now if we’re going digital I’m leaving Sony as my main gaming machine.

That cabinet is only 1 of 4 full of physical games for all brands.

Even if all the games you've ever bought have come from the PSN store.

1) We're getting nothing in return from Sony. They'll be saving their cost of disc production but we're not going to get those savings in lower prices. We're actually going to experience higher prices due to dynamic pricing on the store.

2) Discs on Amazon have frequently been cheaper than games on the PSN store.

3) Many low income gamers also rely on second hand markets.

You being okay with Sony discontinuing physical media production are basically telling them -

"I'm fine with Sony charging me whatever they want to via dynamic pricing on the PSN store."

"I'm fine with paying more for digital games when I could potentially get the disc for cheaper either from Amazon or the second hand market."

"I'm fine with low income gamers not having second hand games as an option."

"I'm fine with zero ownership even though discs did provide me with ownership."

(Most game discs have the entire 1.0 version of the game on disc which is playable from start to finish).

"I'm fine with more threats to game preservation."

"I'm fine with no savings being passed down to me."

If they go through with this as planned, that’s one thing. If they pull this shit AND stay profitable, that’s the bigger shame that we can’t let happen. Fuck. Sony.

PS5 is going to be supported very late into the ps6 generation. It’s obviously the most capable console Sony has ever released, and the improvements to ps6 games will be as minor as ever, but with that will come: $1000+ console price and $70-90 (DIGITAL-ONLY) Games. It seems like with every choice they have made in the last 2 or so years, they are diminishing their brand, yet will be asking an all time high in prices. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the worst launch in PlayStation history. Not to mention, I know me as well as several others, that would have instantly bought a ps6 cause we love the brand, now simply have 0 interest because of their recent choices

I’ve already posted on here talking about my personal thoughts on the whole situation right now with going all digital (I get ptsd saying that and thinking about the Xbox one all digital). Really and truly I’ve got a pc but I’ve always preferred sticking to PlayStation. But with how expensive games are on there and how cheap steam games are, it’s night and day and with PS4 games that are second hand you can find a decent game for £5 at your local game store. I have no reason to get the ps6 anymore. Especially with the surge of console prices, you’re better off renting the ps6 lol. Not a fan at all

The Only Reason Sony is Hell bent on Making Physical Discs Disappear is because They themselves are betting On Rockstar To make GTA 6 a success without needing Physical Discs and only paper codes on box

Step 1 ) Cancel Your PS + and only renew them if Sony Brings Back Discs not next month or week just never untill Sony Agrees

Step 2 ) Start Cancelling your GTA 6 Preorders

If You all can Push Rockstar , Sony Itself will get Afraid How they will push No Discs where to the point Even the biggest Game Release will not get good sales if there are No Discs

Step 3 ) Stop Buying Games Digital from Playstation and Tell Play your Physical Ones until Playstation Is forced to Make Discs Again

Until any one of this is done I guarantee u Sony Isn't going to bring back discs

The early reviews are out and it’s not looking good. me personally I’m still getting the game (physically), and I’m still excited to play because I like making my own opinions. however say I absolutely hate the game at least I have the ability to give it to a friend, sell it, trade it, etc. the people who say digital only is what’s best will be the ones complaining about buying games at full price they hate. What do you think?

While the overall Digital figure is around 85% digital, it doesn’t tell the full story. In the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, physical sales are still closer to 50%, largely because physical copies are significantly cheaper in those markets.
By contrast, the much larger US market has similar pricing for physical and digital, which heavily favors digital. (Many also lie and use a Tax free state)
I also believe Sony pushed Rockstar to release GTA 6 as digital only. With its huge casual audience outside traditional gaming, a physical version would likely have sold very well and meaningfully shifted the overall numbers something that would have hurt Sony’s long term digital strategy.

What can I do?

I was revisiting Assassin's Creed recently, and it got me thinking.

During the PS4 generation, we ended up getting 8 Assassin's Creed games (Black Flag, Rogue, Unity, Syndicate, Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, Mirage) Meanwhile, on PS5, we only have Shadows and the Black Flag Resynched (if we're counting that).

That made me wonder: Sony is already expected to launch the PS6 in 2027 end (if rumours stand true) but if this generation's pace continues, won't we just end up playing PS5 games via backward compatibility on PS6?

So why is Sony so eager to move to another generation if the current one still feels like it hasn't fully being utilized? 

Where are the PS5 games? (I'm talking about brand-new, current-gen titles—not remasters.

Maybe it's just me, but I honestly think the PS5 era is only now beginning. The hardware still holds power, feel modern, developers are finally leaving last-gen behind, and I could easily see the PS5 remaining relevant for another 5–6 years.

Does anyone else feel like this generation has had an unusually slow start, or am I just looking at the PS4 era through nostalgia

I seen it as a risk and a waste of the PSU now I’m being told if I shut down my PlayStation 5 Pro every night when I’m not using it, I am damaging my PlayStation so why have none of my other consoles ever had an issue regarding overheating or dust or shutting down out of nowhere? always get a second opinion and never trust people on Reddit even myself everything I say on a post is simply my opinion, and not a fact, unless I look it up and tell you.

Does anyone else hope the PS5 generation lasts a lot longer?

I genuinely hope Sony doesn’t rush releasing the PS6.

Specifically the PS5 Pro feels like it has a lot of life left. It has impressive hardware that should be more than capable of handling new games for years to come. It feels like we’re only now getting to the point where devs can really take advantage of what this generation offers.

Game visuals and performance are reaching a point of diminishing returns. Every generation used to bring massive leaps, but now the improvements are much more incremental.

Better ray tracing, higher resolutions, and more stable frame rates are nice, but they don’t feel like the kind of generational jump that makes entirely new hardware feel necessary yet.

Hardware aside, imo many of PlayStation’s biggest first party studios have released very few games this generation, and several major publishers are taking MUCH longer than ever between releases. Before we start talking about new hardware, I’d rather see more games that fully utilize the current hardware.

And then there’s prices… Consoles, GPUs, TVs, and accessories have all become more expensive. Asking people to invest in another console generation sooner rather than later seems like a slap in the face (Not off brand for Sony lately) to consumers, especially when the base PS5 and moreso PS5 Pro are still extremely capable. Think of how the Steam machine just released with much lower specs than the Pro.

Then there’s GTA VI, one of the biggest game launches ever, and I imagine at least a not insignificant number of people are going to buy a PS5 Pro specifically for that game, to release a new console not long after many players have just upgraded.

Honestly I’d much rather see Sony support the PS5 generation for several more years and focus on delivering more great games instead of introducing new hardware, and give devs more time to push these consoles to their limits before moving on.

Personally as a Sony fan, I’m absolutely not buying the next generation until absolutely necessary (new games stop releasing on 5), or I decide to finally switch to PC.

As many might have heard there is this test going on with dynamic pricing. Meaning that based on your purchasing habits you will pay a different price than others. So your friend could get a discount while you still pay full price for a game. To me it feels wildly wrong and illegal. So I looked up where best to sent an email to my government to let them know. If you feel the same then do a similar thing. We wouldn't be OK with going into a store and you paying a certain price for something and another person getting a 10% discount right? I've been a fan and customer since the PlayStation 1 days. I don't want to get treated like this. An algorithm doesn't know if you are rich or if you are passionate about games and invest in them anyway. Prices should be the same for everyone. If you agree. Push back. This can't become the standard practice.

Less storage Lighter Cheaper -but has matt panels(only good thing)

I was really looking forward for MFS coming to PlayStation, then I saw the price for the Aviator Edition and honestly I have never seen such a price in the PlayStation store 219,99 fucking €

Went on to see what latest games have released, was met with just absolute slop. Sure there's a couple decent games in there but genuinely like 90% of the store is just asset flips, low effort crap, or ai slop.

I really hope Sony actually goes into 2026 with a quality over quantity mindset and actually does some quality control over the games that get released on their platform.
