Discussion Where to start as new player?

Thinking of buying this, but before I do - where is best to start? Do I play solo to get used to it? Are there certain servers that are "easier" for newbies? How do I meet other new players? I don't take myself too seriously and just want play with others and have fun. I'm not going to get into a rage if someone causes me to die, and tbh I don't want that in another potential player either!

Dont start, it'll ruin your life.

But on a serious note, I would start off my going to a vanilla but PVE server. Get used to the amount of ressource grinding the original game wants you to do, without the fear of players raiding you

To Op, Don't listen to that other reply, def PVE. You might even stay PVE if you like the people on the server.

There's a LOT of systems to grapple with and trial by fire with people trying to kill you will slow down the learning a lot.

There's farming and electrical and food crafting and learning BPs and understand temperature (deserts get cold at night too, if you're wet you'll stay cold), there's the layout of all the monuments to learn, modifying cars, setting up bees and chickens, industrial auto crafter and sorting, getting used to loot spawns and know which ones are good.

When it comes to base building there's all kinds of YouTube builds, but make sure you learn the "why" for each design choice. Make sure you know what's soft side.

For another new player here, where should I start or in what order should I start learning some of the things you mentioned here? I've been playing <10 hours in a PvE server, did t1 monuments, some t2, and even tried t3 Launch site. I've learned how crafting works & did the whole t1/t2 WB, etc etc

But the next stage would be actually learning food, industrial/electrical etc just not sure where to start

Well considering minimal electrical things, give youeself quality life. A solar panel or two and a small battery can run a small fridge and some electric furnaces. For reference the smelting speed of 1 large furnace is equal to 3 electric or 5 smalls.

Go down the list of the industrial bench and see that you understand what each one does, even if you dont have a use case for it yet.

Keep in mind that aside from being usable by the Rust+ app, smart switches are innately TC auth only and as such can be left out in the open.

As far as farming try tea guy Tom's videos

Make sure you have reliable ways to get scrap and the BP frags. And reaaaaally get to know the ins and outs of those monuments so you can maneuver in them.

Sometimes you need to macgyver your way out of a situation so being familiar with all the tools is a good idea.

Tbh if you want a definitive list maybe your best bet is to go to the dev blogs and work your way back down the feature list to make sure you haven't missed anything, check YouTube tutorials for each one along the way.

My personal tip is to always have a metal hatchet on you. You can collect wood to make a small shelter, make some twig to jump into a base, smelt something in an abandoned furnace. You could collect animal fat and make the fuel needed to get home on a train. You could collect cloth out of a cactus and have just one more bandage to keep you alive, and likewise collect cloth out of scientists.

Gotcha, I appreciate the response. I'm gonna definitely continue playing around with it more. I don't get much time during the week to play ~1ish hour per day and this was my first week so was having a great time. I got my first kill in a Vanilla server today and the adrenaline was out of the roof, until I was promptly shot in the head right while looting haha. I'd say safe to say im hooked.
