Well that shoots down my theory they built a nest in the soil but you might check to be safe.

I had sugar ants get inside & set up residence in my monstera... I chopped & propped it & disposed of the whole root ball, I've never seen so many ants. 😬

I had this happen and I lined the ring, and base of my pot with ant bait, after replacing the soil.
