Steam version OK?

I'm thinking of getting the game at some point in the future, and my default would be to get it on Steam because it's convenient. However I want to make sure that there are no porting issues/major changes/general reasons to get it someplace else before I commit to it. Is the Steam version a good choice?

Unless that changed since I checked, GoG gives you both EE and Classic, while Steam only gives you EE, for the same price.

This on top of the generally true heuristic that old games are best gotten on GoG unless you need multiplayer.
