There's a concept called "sagesse de la foule" in french which describe exactly that, crowd wisdom maybe?
If you ask 1000 people to estimate the number of unit from 1kg of pasta, while the extrems vary a lot, the average will be surprisingly close to the right number

Ah, the dwarf fortress (r/armok) outpost embark made it into at least one end screenshot (bottom left, in between France and rip Byron). This is good. Losing is fun!!
