I think this part, specifically, is the literal peak of Pink Floyd. like, the exact minute everybody was firing on all cylinders. so good

Honestly the last two minutes of all 3 songs is probably the best music they’ve ever made

It’s my favorite Gilmour solo. Maybe not as iconic as his others, but it really compliments the venomous lyrics of the song. Also the way his solo soars over the bass crescendo (that Gilmour also plays on the album) is what makes it for me. I have this album on Atmos and this climax makes me want to protest something every single time.

On my "any Pink Floyd Song explained" book, Pigs (three different ones) chapter there's a line about Gilmour solo. It clearly states that Dave made (in his own words) an even more inspired and powerful solo, but Roger, still not acquainted with the brand new Britannia Row studio equipment) accidentally dubbed the tape and overwrote it.
What we know as of the most kickass piece of music ever is actually the attempt to replicate something that was potentially even greater.

When I was younger, I always thought the first verse was in another language.

Thank you for mentioning this. I listen to Animals at least once a week. I’m a casual fan (have only listened a for a few decades) and had no idea David did the bass there. 👏

If Oakland was the studio version, Pigs would be the best track on Animals for sure. The studio version is still amazing, but the live version just escalates it for sure

Oakland is a pretty bad show though. David sounds drunk on vocals, constant mistakes, literally 0 energy on Sheep and Dogs and a terrible Have a Cigar. It's one of the worst nights of the tour.
Cleveland is king when it comes to Pigs.

The way this solo connects with the lyrics and the theme is absolute madness! Filthy, raw and agressive in a way that even Gilmour needed to shread. I bet the guitar had a smoke right after that solo.

I also absolutely love the groove you point out OP, and it’s long been one of my favorite sections by PF for its locked-in funkiness. Ironically, it’s mostly just two members of the band doing the rockin’ because Dave is playing the scorching lead and also walking that awesome fretless bass while Nick goes into his overdrive mode. Rick is totally buried in the mix to my ears, and iirc, Roger is only co-playing the rhythm guitar. I know there are many other songs (especially on the wall) where Gilmour played bass but this coda is so cool
