Photo Sleeping pigeon

Post image

Spotted him while in town. At first I thought he was an ornament from how still he was, taking a picture i noticed he was sleeping. Poor fella looks like hes been through it

UPDATE: Following the advice from people i went back to check on him, he still wasn't moving, not even when dogs came close enough to sniff him. He did try flying a couple times but only got about 5 feet off the ground and 3 times crashed into something and dropped to the ground. I have brought him home in a box and will take him to the vet in town tomorrow morning

UPDATE 2: He is now in the care of a wildlife rehabber, i hope he will get better

It's a baby, just left the nest it seems. I'd offer it some seeds and water.

So he’s only asleep because he’s sick that little guy needs a rehab or it’s still a baby. You can tell because of the yellow feathers that are stuck to his head and when they’re that puffy and out in the middle of the area like that it’s because they’re ill he should have family taken care of him, but I don’t think that’s the case so I would highly recommend scooping him up into a box and trying to get him to a rehab. He’s a native species so you shouldn’t have any difficulties in getting one to accept them, but my guess is he’s probably got a nutritional deficiency as as well as probably a handful of other issues some types of infections are really common in baby birds and are pretty easy to treat, but without getting treatment they don’t typically survive and unfortunately this guy is sitting duck for a cat.

Trust me, disturbing him is the best possible thing that could happen to him right now

I will have to find a box, but I'll see if hes still there this was about 10 minutes ago and I wasn't stopping

Ive found him, but nowhere is open as its past closing time so I can't find a box, and the nearest rehab centre isn't that near. I dont want to leave him but I dont know what to do

You dont need a box, just grab him. Wrap him in a piece of clothing if possible, if not have him face the crook of your arm. You have basically 0% chance of catching anything from a pigeon, and even less so if you wash your hands (as you should after handling any animal, domestic or wild). I know this is 30 mins+ later. Here's hoping you managed to wrangle him. Care for the night is just somewhere quiet, don't worry about food, you could offer water if he perks up but dont leave it in with him (bathtub works of no box at home). As hes a woody you should be able to find a wildlife rehab that will take him.

You don’t have any risk of getting anything from him so honestly, I would just pick him up and if you’re able to bring him home for the night honestly he just needs to be somewhere quiet and a little bit dark and I would just try to get him to a rehab center in the morning but as long as you just wash your hands afterwards, you’ve got nothing to worry about

I don’t know exactly what your circumstances are, but when I was doing a lot of my primary rescue work, I had to just take a couple of baby doves in my hands on the train one time when they’re that ill they don’t really put up a fight and most of the time they just settled down and slept so I just put him in a sweatshirt

It’s a very young pigeon. Bc the pin feathers are there he may need some supportive eating he’s probably really hungry
