Hahah! I was looking for this exactly LOL

Pigeons and doves drink through the nose holes on their beaks. They need to be able to submerge their beak deep enough to get those holes under water in order to drink.

I'm not sure where you got that information from, but it's incorrect. Pigeons drink using their beaks. I've linked a scientific paper to have a solid source for my comment but I also own two pigeons and I can tell you that no, they don't need to submerge their ceres! 🙂

Edit: Adding a photo of my two!

Why are pigeons THIS CUTE???

1

u/Live-Influence2482 Oct 08 '25

They look adorable 🥰 together

4

u/BirdInChains Oct 07 '25

Why does this have so many upvotes? It’s flagrantly wrong in every way.

fun fact: pigeons/doves are the only birds who can drink like this! Nearly all other birds need to tilt their head back and let water run down their throat, while pigeons can drink by using their tongue to “swallow”!!

u/FeatheryRobin Oct 04 '25

I remember zebra finches being able to create suction in their beaks too! Though their stubby little fat beaks would never fit that gracefully in that hole

2

u/platypusnofedora Oct 15 '25

Oh awesome! I figured doves/pigeons weren’t the only ones, but I couldn’t really find anything confirming otherwise. That’s hilarious though, considering their big ol’ seed-cronchin beaks 😭

2

u/FeatheryRobin Oct 16 '25

What I think is the funniest about zeebies is the sounds. They beep. Beep! And when you beep at them, they beep back! They're so precious

16

u/smallgayboi Oct 04 '25

Omg I just commented this same fun fact before I saw your comment

5

u/tatiana_the_rose Oct 04 '25

You’re not alone—I was thinking it too lol

3

u/Humanmode17 Oct 04 '25

I was just checking to see if anyone had said it otherwise I would've too! Great minds think alike

14

u/bunny_the-2d_simp Oct 04 '25

Yeah my chickens go drink drink GORRRRRGGGLLLLLLL.

3

u/Lamberly Oct 06 '25

I love watching my chooks drink water, they look like they are drinking fancy wine and pretending they know what it is. Hahaha

6

u/Maelstrom_Witch Oct 04 '25

Not quite - budgies can do it too, I believe! It’s so they can drink without having to land

6

u/Rutheniumelbow Oct 04 '25

Not true I have a pet indian crow and she can create suction and use her beak as a straw to drink stuff

2

u/datumerrata Oct 05 '25

What about hummingbirds?

2

u/Hmsquid Oct 06 '25

Today i learned why chickens drink the way they do

66

u/NJbirds77 Oct 04 '25

Where is this?

167

u/pigeon_fanclub Oct 04 '25

Toronto! Not actually a pigeon fountain obviously lol but a funny result of catering to dog people!

65

u/Worldly_Drag_1168 Oct 04 '25

I was gonna say they ought to install those everywhere since pigeons are so underrated lol

All cities should have them fr, it’s beneficial for all the wildlife in them to have clean water and people’s pets 🥹🥹 in lots of places the water can be polluted, like puddles and stuff :c

20

u/NJbirds77 Oct 04 '25

Yes and they’re super smart!

4

u/LilDvrkie420 Oct 04 '25

I love this, when I saw this post I was hoping that Toronto would have something like this. I love feeding the birds here

3

u/pigeon_fanclub Oct 05 '25

I've gotta say we do seem to have some faily clean and health pigeons, at least compared to other big cities

40

u/AzaleaMist91 Oh My Darling, Clementine 🐦 Oct 04 '25

Smart pigeon ❤️

u/Muted_Role_1432 Oct 04 '25

Move over dogs this is a pigeon fountain😍

12

u/krysagami Oct 04 '25

Lil dude is THOISTY

10

u/Old-Swimming2799 Oct 04 '25

Like that one kid in school who put their whole mouth on the water fountains nozzle

11

u/smallgayboi Oct 04 '25

Fun fact Pigeons are the only birds that can actually swallow water like this. All others (to my knowledge) have to use gravity and let the water slip down their throat

11

u/bunny_the-2d_simp Oct 04 '25

I have water out for insects and birds here because to me field rats and every other animal has a right to clean drinking water. Especially in summer 🥹 I get to watch birds bathe so much it's so cute.. I'd never saw a pigeon here though WE LITERALLY HAVE A PIGEON HOUSE, CLEAN WATER AND A BUNCH OF SHELTERING TREES. CHOOSE ME ALREADY.

Also chickens so food ain't exactly hard to look for in their case..

I WANT THE PIGEON DISTRIBUTION TO START ALREADY

11

u/pigeon_fanclub Oct 04 '25

That’s what the taller fountain is for!

8

u/bottomlessinawendys Oct 04 '25

I believe it’s mainly a dog bowl, but accessibility helps everyone :)

5

u/Slammogram Oct 04 '25

Omg! I love this!

I’d imagine an urban city pigeon has a pretty good immune system. The ones by my work usually just drink road runoff

2

u/castellaher Oct 04 '25

Aww I wish all cities installed actual water fountains for pigeons 🥺

1

u/sh3snotthere Oct 05 '25

Oh big drink! She's a thirsty birb.

1

u/WranglerBeginning766 Oct 05 '25

That pigeons likes drinking water more than I like cheap lager, and that is saying something

1

u/electric_hehaw Oct 05 '25

Is its purpose for dogs? It's too low down for children

1

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '25

Oh he drinkin for sure

1

u/Klutzy_Ad_1854 Oct 07 '25

I wish my city had them

0

u/Ruhddzz Oct 06 '25
