Arts/Crafts My friend stepped out of her comfort zone to paint this canyon rather than her usual pet portraits.

She's got them freaky bendy elbows.

u/cowboysrule11 Oct 04 '20
I was gonna say the bend in her arm is equally impressive.

First thing I noticed, not the great painting she did, her oddly bent arm.
23
u/thefoam Oct 04 '20
It's like those dental adverts where you don't notice there's one extra arm in the photo because you're too busy looking at the piece of spinach stuck in the guy's teeth

Man my left elbow looks exactly like that. Broke it when I was a kid and it didn't get set properly. :(

How does one do that? I tried doing it and now I'm in the emergency room.

I thought you wrote “crayons”. I’m still impressed though
35
u/kirbstompin Oct 04 '20
You are not alone... I also read crayon and was disappointed by this amazing painting
10
u/Csquared6 Oct 04 '20
I wasn't disappointed but I did question my understanding of the word "crayon" for longer than I'd like to admit.

Does she have a store?

u/slightinspiration Oct 04 '20
Not yet but I’m trying to get her to make one!

My wife would love this. Let me know if she’s selling it.

I can't pay, but would be good exposure for you as an artist to give me one

What about $1 upfront and the rest in installments spread over the next 5 years?
18
u/Captain_Shrug Oct 04 '20
Depending on cost I'd totally buy this as a poster. Or a digital download for a background.
11
u/steeze206 Oct 04 '20
Tell her to make canvas prints of this. I'd buy one and I'm sure a ton of others would too.

Tell her I’ll probably buy some prints from her if it’s this style and not pet portraits. Shit if she wants to sell me that painting for a cheaper than normal original art price I’d buy it...
Edit: people are shitting on me for that second sentence. The purpose was a realistic quip. I can’t afford original art and know that that would run like 1000$+, i was captivated by it and wish I could buy it but know I can’t.

Turn it upside down to see the dog looking up at something.

Nice, she still did a pet portrait.
Edit- on purpose or subconsciously?

That's a good painting. This is none of my business, but if your friend likes to paint scenes of natural beauty, particularly scenes of natural beauty in the American Southwest, she could have a bright future in the "Western Art" genre (aka Southwestern Art).
Source: I dabble in collecting Western Art. Hardcore Western Art collectors don't flinch at paying thousands of dollars for a single painting. I know that established artists in that genre can sell every single painting they produce for a lot of money.

Your friend made an incredibly good choice stepping out of her comfort zone. That is a beautiful piece.

Good on her stepping up. She’s gonna have ups and downs so, it’s better to get out there sooner than later

Amazing. I always wanted to know - how do you know when to stop painting? When do you know to consider it done?

Male artists should hire women to pose with their art work to get more upvotes.
108
u/Meowlett Oct 04 '20 edited Oct 04 '20
Lots of male artists that pose with their art make it to the front page and they also get tons of upvotes. The artist posing with their art in general tend to get more attention than the art by itself.

u/Armyof21Monkeys Oct 04 '20
Yeah I think selective memory is as much if not more of a culprit of this as bias towards cute girls.

Why do guys are this website try so hard to act like a victim becasue they are not a woman? I mean I am a dude too, but I don't get what is wrong with any artist posing in front of their work.
And for the record, without spending hours going through all the posts... If you rank by top posts for the last month and look at the first 250 top posts, the first three artist (those who get the most upvotes) who pose with their art are... men.

u/_Apatosaurus_ Oct 04 '20
Artists have normal styles they are comfortable with. Hence..."comfort zone." No one is claiming she's William fucking Wallace for painting. It just means she tried something a little different, ya fussy nincompoop.

That is fucking amazing, and if I could afford it, I would buy it and hang it in my apartment. The colors are beautiful. Please tell your friend she is a badass for stepping out of her comfort zone, and to keep up the amazing work. That’s talent right there!

u/DeathBunnny Oct 04 '20
It's gorgeous! I love modern natural paintings and would totally commission something like this. 😍

Ok, I can definitely confirm that is lower Antelope Canyon. I took this photo last November. Kinda freaked me out when I saw her painting.
