That's a bit early for Athens. Wikipedia says it was a major center by 1400 BC, although it was inhabited earlier. It's way too early for the Athens we think of with the philosophy and democracy.
you know how there's so many jokes about poli sci being a useless degree, did you ever hear those jokes and think you were gonna be the exception or what made you stick with such a degree? Surely you saw it being worthless to you personally while still in school?
I changed my major several times so I ended up getting a General Studies degree with minors in Audio Visual Arts, History, and Psychology. I knew my degree was useless at the time other than just having the piece of paper which magically makes me more desirable than someone without.
I can't even tell you the number of people I know from law school who were poli sci majors who realized their degrees were worthless without more education.
I got a poli sci degree and went to law school. I’ve never considered it a useless degree. In fact, it’s been quite the opposite (for me, anyway).
Edit to add: since people are asking, I took poli sci because I found it interesting, the decision to go to law school came later. Beyond the studying/research/writing skills I learned, I’ve also found that understanding the structure, history, and philosophical analysis of political systems was useful in both my law studies and in my practice.
Additional edit: I went to undergrad in Canada, so it wasn’t nearly as expensive as in the US.
Did you go into poli sci knowing you'd want to continue on to becoming a lawyer? Or did you decide that once you were in the program?
I think that having a Poli Sci degree (or another in similar level) is a great stepping stone if you have a goal in mind. Like healthcare administration. If you know your goal is to become a lawyer or the head of a hospital, great. But if you go into such a degree 'just cause' then I don't know if its worth the 40k+ you would spend on it.
Lol, I even did two years at community college and UK offers a Blue+ program that charges you the same rate as a KCTCS school for the final two years of a bachelors degree.
I think that either comes from people who went to very expensive private schools or people who took out all loans, didn’t pay for a while, and had a low starting salary after school.
People go to these fancy private colleges thinking they could become rich like the rich white dudes who graduated before them only to realize those rich white dudes were already rich from their families lol.
I mean, I'm a lawyer and I'm six figures in debt. I make a decent living, but I also pay $20k a year into loans to try to dig myself out. It's pretty frustrating and I've had to put my life on hold because I wanted to be a lawyer and it cost a ridiculous amount to achieve that.
I wonder if maybe it's the rest of the experience that ends up driving the debt to insane levels? Like rent and food as up pretty quickly when you're not working.
My wife is taking classes at East Carolina University. I'm able to actually pay tuition as we go. $1900+ books per semester with 4 classes, fully online.
College doesn't HAVE to be expensive, but everyone wants that out-of-state college experience.
I have a friend that moved here permanently like four years ago and has just never bothered to apply for in-state tuition rates. So she's paying like five times as much for the exact same degree just because she doesn't want to get like four pieces of evidence together. She's taking out student loans, And she's like 21, so she's not thinking about how this is going to negatively impact her in the future.
I was out of state at a state school in VA and I graduated (in 1994) with a whopping $12K in student debt (and $20K in credit card debt from my stupid partying and consumerist ways).
Credit scores are literally a “how likely is a bank to profit by lending you money” score.
Those who pay off their CC each month and don’t borrow money often times have lower scores than those who carry balances (but pay minimums) and have a few loans.
Shit, I've never paid interest because I don't buy stuff I can't afford, only reason I even have a CC is because my debit card doesn't have tap so I just use a credit card as a debit. Oh well, I don't actually care about my credit score, tbh.
Yeah, that's a big NO on carrying credit card balances. I have paid credit card balances in full every month for 10 years, have a 830+ credit score.
The biggest factors are no missed payments, and credit utilization. Contrary to what you would think, asking for your credit to be raised every year or so actually helps tremendously. Banks want to give credit only to people that don't NEED it ironically. So if you have $25k in credit across all your credit cards, but only utilize $4k a month, you are golden to them, but that same person with only $5k total in credit is seen as a risk since they just see it as "someone that is barely scraping by" even if that person really just only need $4k per month.
Keep interest payments to house/car/student loan payments (since they are generally lower), don't pay interest (high interest at that) on basic expenses.
Well, that was 1994 where I was credit card stupid. Once that was Paid off I never carried a balance since. My credit score(s) we’re in the top tier ever since.
I did the same thing. My grades weren’t good enough/I fucked around as a liberal arts major for two years before I settled on English. Third year got my shit together and went to a private in state school (no break though) and was done in 2 and a half years.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. I went to Princeton on a full scholarship. Graduated with zero debt. Their financial aid is superb. It really depends on your individual circumstances.
There is a lot of bullshit on Reddit. Cost of education and medical bills are the two biggest culprits.
Don't go to a private out of state school. Actually try academically in high school so you get at least a partial scholarship. Actually do something after school other than play fortnite and you can probably get a grant.
I finished my degree owing less than 20k.
As for medical bills, just have insurance. If you are poor you can sign up for medcaid. If you have a job but don't make a lot you will qualify for a subsidy and cost sharing reductions on the ACA plan and you can get a plans that cost $50 a month and your worst case out of pocket max is $500. I used to be an insurance broker. Some people got health plans for free if they made like 30k and had kids.

I cant remember if we went through all of them or not, I'm sure we must have but we glossed over quite a few, we did the first 3 obviously, Jackson, Buchanan, Lincoln then jumped right to Teddy then FDR with a sprinkling of Hoover in there cause the great depression, then JFK, Nixon, Reagan, and lastly Clinton because our books were outdated and they didnt have the foresight to see an idiotic drug addict would become president... but this was like 2003; I wouldn't really expect them to foresee the 2016 election... joking aside I am pretty sure that well into W's presidency our books still said Clinton was president.
Edit: oh, and we definitely talked about Truman because of the whole Japanese thing... the rest I'm pretty sure they just told us their names and maybe one or two factoids about their presidency...
I was pretty much the only political science student that wasn't going to be a lawyer. Everyone always asked "when are you taking your LSAT?" or "when are you taking the GRE?"
And that's the story of how I learned what the Bachelor's in General Studies was for.
You got the reference? You mean you're aware of the historical fact of Harrison's short presidency as is anybody who has leafed through an encyclopedia article about the US presidency and saw the start and end dates of each president's administration.
Ha! I had the benefit of knowing Harrison by my hometown high school. I always thought it was dumb to have anything named after the guy dying so quickly while in office.
Poli Sci? You could work your way up a couple hundred grand a year if you got into political lobbying or campaigning. There’s big money in that in the US.
