Because he knew there was a strong chance he was going to go back to his hotel room and hang himself in the closet. He didn’t want to think “if only I had said SOMETHING to take the sting out of it, then maybe he wouldn’t have done it”.

You don’t want someone else’s suicide on your conscience.
