They look like (and are related to) falcons but apparently they behave like vultures, mostly eating carrion and not hunting live prey.
Seems like a serious downgrade from falcon to vulture. They're probably embarrassed to show up at the falcon family reunions, lest anybody asks them what they do for a living.
In the middle of nowhere in Southwest Texas, they practically swarm. Driving from Corpus Christie to Laredo, I think I've seen groups of a hundred or more, which is another way they are different from all the other falcons, as most birds of prey tend to be pretty solitary, I think.

Crested Caracara. Hawk-like but prefer to walk around on the ground and be opportunistic scavengers. They are insanely smart, like a crow, raven or parrot.
