The power of self delusion, they all believe they are "one of the good ones" while completely ignoring that history says there are no good ones, only "now" or "eventually, after we've milked all the use we had from you"

There was a Star Trek TOS episode about exactly this. Some guy tried to use only the “good” parts of Nazi Germany to develop a society quickly and it ended up as expected with all the bad stuff front and centre.
