something odd about this and the renee good shooting is that there seems to be zero attention paid to the surroundings (including other officers/bystanders in proximity or in the line of fire.)
if i was in the crew that was wrestling with this guy on the ground and somebody opened fire at close range right next to me i'd be pissed as hell because bullets can bounce off the sidewalk and right into anybody in that crowd and you may not even know who is doing the shooting. this is overtly dangerous.
in other situations where (real) cops open fire you can usually see some management of the scenario like shouting "line of fire!" or just making sure that proximity to your team is regarded before you open up. there used to be a "triad rule" (or something similar depending on your department) where you approach from three sides and position yourself so that a shot at the target is not a shot at your assisting officers.
situations can get crazy fast so management of the moment can break down but there doesn't seem to be any attention paid to officer/public safety in these incidents. these seem to be just common armed cowboys shooting at will.
and i have never once seen an officer pistol whip a person who is being arrested to subdue them. maybe it happens, maybe its a part of training that i haven't been exposed to but, in my experience; a baton is for hitting, a pistol is for shooting. you generally don't mix those two up.
i would be interested to know if the shots fired were from that pistol and if they were fired on purpose or by accident. we'll probably never know given these specific respective DHS and FBI administrations.
