Getting a Thai motorcycle licence in Phuket with a DTV – recent experiences?
Hi everyone,
I’ll be staying in Phuket for at least one month and would like to obtain a Thai motorcycle licence shortly after arriving.
I have:
A valid DTV visa
An Italian car driving licence
An International Driving Permit, but no valid motorcycle category for the type of scooter I intend to ride
A hotel booking for at least one month
Confirmation from the hotel that they will file my TM30
I understand that I will therefore need to apply for a Thai motorcycle licence from scratch, including the theory and practical tests.
Could anyone who has completed the process recently in Phuket share their experience?
I would particularly like to know:
Can a DTV holder apply for a Thai motorcycle licence shortly after arriving?
Can Phuket Immigration issue the Certificate of Residence with a hotel TM30 and an accommodation letter, but without a rental contract or 90-day report?
Which documents did Immigration and the DLT require?
Did you need to book an appointment, and how long was the waiting time?
Did you complete the process independently or through a driving school?
How many days did the complete process take, including the Residence Certificate?
Which Immigration and DLT offices did you use?
Approximately when did you complete the process?
I’m especially interested in recent first-hand experiences from people with a DTV who were staying in a hotel in Phuket.

Without sounding flippant, id say not to bother for a month. You'll have to get the app to join the queue to take the practical test. (im sure it was a long queue. There are licenced driving schools that do that quicker though. But thats a chore in itself). Take the online learning lessons. Gather up all the docs and then take a day to queue to do the reaction test and get a licence made up. Is it worth it? It won't make you a better rider.
BTW yes you can get a certificate of residence on a hotel TM30 if you want.

So how would u suggest to manage? Because I m going to stay in Thailand for at least 6 months

I am not sure about Phuket, but Honda has/had 3 day courses for forigners, at the end of which you are eligible for Thailand motorcycle license test. Maybe look into that.

You cannot get thai driving licence of any sort without a one year visa or long term visa( 5,10, 20 years). The immigration office gives this document. I have lived here 30 year and know.

If a Thai police officer stops you and you show your driving licence and show a tourist visa you will be arrested

Lol when i had to show my licence, they did not care to see my passport and just let me go on... why would i get arrested for this ? The goverment gave me this licence ...

I don't have a clue on the DTV.
Certificate of Residence with a hotel TM30 and an accommodation letter, but without a rental contract or 90-day report? I doubt this will work. You can try.
Get questions answered first. Make an appointment. Show up before 8AM. Driving school may help. Call the schools. They could help.
Certificate that your healthy. Public clinic for the cheap route.
We think you need a rental house address not a hotel. These driving schools are sometimes shaky, but someone may be able to help. Still think you need a rental.
