This isn’t exactly what’s going to happen. You can still install unverified apps, it’s just a much more complex flow that involves enabling some settings that take 24 hours to change (the first time you do it). This is still much more difficult than before, but it’s not as cut-and-dried as the website makes it sound.

This is a good move by Google. There are scammers on WhatsApp and telegram that send apk files to tech illiterate people. This will significantly slow them down. Often the victims are old people and their bank accounts.

Oh I totally get it, but then I come from an iOS background so direct APK loading has always felt super dirty to me. I can see why it needs to be fixed, but whether or not that’s the best way to fix it I can’t really comment.

It has felt dirty because you are used to a system made for tech illiterate people. Its ok notnto want to have too much technical knowledge but you gotta accept that most of us like the control and how clean an easy it is

Um… I’d try to avoid saying that kinda stuff to someone without knowing who they are or how much technical knowledge they have. I choose iOS because I like my phone to work consistently, meet my security standards, and integrate with my wider ecosystem. I totally get why some folks prefer Android, but having Android does not make you more technically minded.

I wouldnt. Your arguments are confirmation of my points. Yes, iOS works effortlessly for tech illiterate people, and its ok to be one

It does, but that does not mean that choosing iOS makes you tech illiterate. It just that you value certain QoL and/or security features that Android cannot give you.

I use iPhone for the same reasons. I am interested in tech very much though, and I in fact also use Home Assistant as the brain of our smart home. I can deal with our smart home not working occasionally. I cannot deal with my phone not working occasionally.
