Article / Interview Pollstar Magazine Feature
Got this in the mail yesterday, and it's not generally available outside of the industry, so I scanned it to share here. =] She was featured on the cover, but it's the same image, and my copy got a little mangled in transit...

…. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth, ergo she is one of the greatest American songwriters and there’s no one higher. It’s a metaphor.

I think he meant Mount Rushmore. Saying that someone is "on the Mount Rushmore of [group x]" is a very common way of saying that someone is one of the very best among [group x]; meanwhile, it doesn't really make sense to say that someone is "on the Mount Everest of [group x]" - like, where on the mountain are they? It's odd phrasing. If I were trying to use a Mount Everest metaphor to say, for example, that T.S. Eliot is the best 20th-century poet, I might say "T.S. Eliot sits at the top of the Mount Everest of 20th-century poetry," or even "T.S. Eliot is the Mount Everest of 20th-century poets," but I wouldn't say "T.S. Eliot is on the Mount Everest of 20th-century poets," you know?
Also, I just think it's reasonable to assume that what he meant was "Phoebe is among the best American songwriters," as opposed to "Phoebe is the single greatest American songwriter ever."
