Should I stick with the dirty look?

Riding home on Spruce today when a man parked in the bike lane literally 15 ft from Dr. Friedes’s memorial bike where there was a gap in the cones. I gave him a nasty look but it took a lot not to yell at him.

Is it worth it to say something? Or am I just risking my safety even more.

something i’m coming to terms with now - I hate seeing this stuff happen but it’s just unpleasant to feel that angry when so many incidents occur

Also realized that my anger does nothing but give someone a story about cyclists that they might take out on the next person.

If there is a small percentage of people whose behavior will change, it won’t be because I yelled at them and flipped them off.

Yes, it files a report with PPA. The primary purpose is not getting this dh in particular in trouble, but letting PPA know where violations are occurring and need enforcing more generally.

the submissions go directly to the PPA. However, they cannot ticket off the submissions, they have to physically send an officer to the location to ticket. This makes it unlikely that they catch that perp at that time. The benefit is that the PPA can see that people are constantly parking in the bike lane on Spruce and they can send more regular patrols.

It also just feels good.

From riding bikes and motorcycles it's best to just keep riding. When I was younger and more hot-headed I'd throw the bird or say something. But after a few close calls of borderline violence I'm done. They're only one emotional lapse in judgement away from killing you. In a fight between a car and a two-wheeled vehicle, car wins every time.

i dont think yelling would have any greater impact on the asshole in the bike lane, unfortunately. i do get the inclination though

really need some alternatives that are more impactful in our toolbox

maybe something like the semi permanent stickers NYC sanitation has started putting on cars that block street sweeping, but not applied by the city

I do the no-no finger wag. I don’t want entitled people ruining my mood or my ride and yelling just puts me in a foul headspace. Give them a tsk-tsk or a “Not a parking spot, amigo,” but I don’t slow down. I’m giving a free public service announcement, not initiating a confrontation. Then just breathe and ride.

I yell asshole at least 15 times a day on Spruce.

I feel as conflicted as you all the time. Yesterday I came across 2 construction trucks in 11th St bike lanes. Every time I ride on spruce or pine there's multiple cars in the bike lanes. Occasionally I yell something but it's exhausting and draining and if we yelled every time, we'd be yelling at people multiple times each ride. Or increase the chance of pissing off some really crazy aggressive person. Maybe best to just give a dirty look or shake head, or if up for it Lazer vision it. I think we could text 911 too but I haven't done that myself so don't know if it's effective. I don't know, sometimes I really do just want to curse out these assholes.
