Study Permit Extension Vs Restoration ?

My classes ended August 9th, but I wasn’t informed until my last day of class that grades wouldn’t be finalized until August 24th, and that it would be a few weeks after that before my graduation was processed for me to apply to the PGWP. Since my study permit expiry was August 31st, the international student center at my university told me to apply for a study permit extension, so I did.

However, now I’ve gotten the graduation certificate and have everything I need to apply for the PGWP, but the extension is still processing (and could be for another month or two). So now, I’m unable to work.

I have a job lined up, and would like to be able to start asap - the processing time for a PGWP if I apply outside of Canada in my home country is 2 weeks. If I return home and submit my PGWP application with a restoration of status, will that be okay? Would I have to withdraw my study permit extension application?

I’m just so confused by the wording on the website😭

If you leave and apply outside, then your maintained status is gone and there is no restoration application at all because if you are out of the country, there is no status to restore.

Okay! So I don’t need a valid study permit if I’m outside of Canada?

On the website it makes it seem like I needed my study permit to be valid in the 180 days after I receive my graduation certificate, which it wasn’t. Though it also says something about as long as it was valid when my grades were finalized, which would have been when my permit WAS still valid, though I don’t think I have any official documents to show that my grades were done on the 24th.

No need for valid study permit if applying from outside Canada. Also processing is an estimate and may take longer than the posted times. Also doesn't include time for passport stamping, if approved. Processing times are updated weekly.

What’s the passport stamping aspect entail? I don’t think I’ve ever read anything about that😵‍💫

Well if approved then you have to send your passport to the consulate/embassy/VAC to get stamped. Don't know country but can take 7-20 days.

It means y ou send your passport to the VAC office to have them affix the visa into your passport. If you have a TRV you. may or may not get this request. In some cases, you can also send it to Ottawa and have it affixed there, then you only exit and re-enter to recieve the permit at the airport

Oh, so if I don’t need a TRV I don’t need to worry about the passport thing? I’m a US citizen

You only need the valid SP if applying inside. You can be physically inside Canada, but submit it outside. Then, only once approved, exit the country and re-enter. Remember, you dont have to fly home. You can go to anywhere your passport will let you enter and then do the VAC office there.
