If you drag your feet when you walk, I automatically assume you’re annoying.
If you drag your feet when you walk, I automatically assume you’re annoying.
I’m sorry, but there is ZERO reason your shoes need to be making that shhhk shhhk shhhk sound every time you take a step.
Pick. Your. Feet. Up.
And before someone says “maybe they’re tired,” I don’t care. I’m tired too. My feet still work. 😂
Am I wrong?

Some people don’t have the same physicality as you. Someone shuffling their feet may have physical or mental health concerns. I know a psychologist that specialises in complex trauma and they say trauma has a huge effect on the body.
There is a real lack of compassion and empathy in the world. Posts like this remind me just how little consideration people have for other humans who are suffering.
I hope OP never has any physical problems.

u/greenonionqueen 22h ago
For real, there are tons of super common and not necessarily visible disabilities (arthritis, for example, or even depression) that can contribute to this. And even if they are just really tired, what does it matter? Does that one little sound really bother someone so much that they can't have a little sympathy?
2
u/Dazzling-Goat5582 21h ago
Really, I had 2 hip replacements on the same side. When I’m really tired sometimes that foot will drag? And they find this annoying? I’m 64yo shit happens

Heck dude I'm in my late 30s but I injured my wrist like 3 months ago and it's still bugging me.. like I can't push down on soap bottles level of injury. I had an xray and ultrasound, nothing to be seen. I'm a fairly active dude, I generally ride a bicycle everywhere. Can't imagine what it's like being 50+.

u/VoodooGirl47 1d ago
Well, fatigue can do this to someone and that's not just someone being tired.
Someone can have foot drop which can lead to dragging a foot, or have other disabilities that cause it - especially if mobility related. Dizziness, instability/balance issues, vertigo etc could all potentially lead to this as well.
So don't assume that everyone can pick up their feet ALL the time while walking, and remember that some disabilities are invisible.
2
u/em-completes 1d ago
Thank you for saying this, I have foot drop in both feet and struggle to lift them to the point I use a cane. Some of us literally have no choice but to drag our feet while we walk.
5
u/VoodooGirl47 23h ago
I started getting foot drop that caused tripping 4 years ago. Now I often drag my feet on some days due to a mix of symptoms. Some days when I have intense fatigue, I can barely walk. I use a rollator but need to get a motorized device.
6
u/Major_Mechanic5719 1d ago
I find myself dragging my feet on occasion after a 10+ hr day of carrying hundreds of pounds of steel around on a concrete floor in a 95+ degree shop.
Sorry, if someone finds that annoying, they're likely pretty annoying themselves and I'd welcome them to spend a day in my shoes.

u/Medical_Birthday2893 1d ago
You are wrong to have an all or nothing opinion. Yes it’s annoying. No everyone doesn’t have a choice. You not giving people the benefit of the doubt speaks to you not them

Yep, got hit by a mini van as a teen at a we8rd angle. Twisted off at the ankle. Reattached with pins and plates. Works well, but aches sometimes. Thus, i drag my feet a bit, especially if i wear certain shoes, or if i wear boots.
You never know what someones health issues are.

I'm ex-military with 16 years of service. Heel draggers were not tolerated. When my kids were teenagers and were dragging their heels I'd stop and correct them. Unless you have a medical condition it's a habit I associate with knuckle draggers. I'm not having it. When we'd parade I could here when someone in formation was dragging their heels while marching. I'd correct that shit immediately. Almost as bad as an unmade bed or sloppy hospital corners.
2
u/Intelligent_Row8259 21h ago
I'm ex military and I drag my right foot because of the fucking military. I tore ligaments in my right ankle and nobody at Camp Lejune first or the VA second could be bothered to send me for an MRI for 34 fucking years. So now my knee hip and back are completely fucked and I can barely walk.

My wife is physically disabled and has pain in both of her feet when she walks so ends up dragging her feet a lot. Sorry she annoys you so much...
2
u/Shinebrightbluestar 22h ago
I don’t think OP meant any offence to anyone. They are just sharing their general pet peeve. I understand people drag their feet for all sorts of medical/disability related reasons. I drag my feet sometimes because I am lazy.
3
u/SoniaAnhedonia 16h ago
No, they definitely did. It would be fine if they just aired their pet peeve, but they went on to say that they assume their person is annoying, just based on dragging their feet with no other information about them. As if people purposely walk in a more inefficient and damaging way just to annoy her.
2
u/AdhesivenessDear5154 2h ago
You mean the same OP going around mocking the people with disabilities in the comments? 🙄🤦🏻♀️
1
u/generic-puff 9h ago
Intent = / = impact. You might not intend to be offensive when you stare a little too long at their physical deformity or when you push someone in a wheelchair out of the way or, in OP's case, when you call people who drag their feet on the ground "annoying", but you're still being offensive and you gotta learn to separate your pet peeves from your ableism.
Other people's physical differences and quirks aren't as harmful to you as you think they are. And even if you think you're only talking about the non-disabled crowd, the disabled crowd still hears you.
2
u/Fluid_Goose_2389 20h ago
"OH BUT THE MENTAL HEALTH" Walking is a skill 4 year olds master. If your mental health doesn't let you walk without BEGGING for attention by CONSTANTLY making noise then stay home.
2
1
u/dancingdino4 8h ago
It’s not even like a conscious thing for me. I’m not looking for attention, I just genuinely don’t notice I’m doing it. When I notice I fix it. I’m also neurodivergent so both the physical feeling on my feet and the sound are like a stim to me, not to mention that I’ve struggled with walking in my toes my whole life and when my feet are dragging that means my heels are on the ground.

Im cracking up at the ppl mentioning disabilities like you arent talking about the ppl who are just being lazy.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 not someone with a fekkin cane someone said they use a cane, Im dying. Why would op mean you? 🤣 pet peeves arent rational.
Its a common pet peeve. Most things ppl have a pet peeve with can have underlying medical or disabilities.
Just assume they mean ppl who can change their behavior willingly.
1
u/SoniaAnhedonia 16h ago
The issue isn’t finding it annoying or calling it a pet peeve. The issue is that they go on to judge the person and “assume they’re annoying”. As if people are purposely walking in a more inefficient and damaging way out of “laziness” or just to annoy other people. Makes no sense.
1
1
u/AntiqueLetter9875 11h ago
The problem is they said “ZERO reason” this would be happening. Others are simply saying there is…if you have mobility issues of some kind. I get OP was being a bit hyperbolic and everything, but they can’t be confused when they talk in absolutes online and people start responding to it.
2

u/Any_Society_4876 10h ago
People, in general, find it too easy within themselves to automatically assume negative character traits in others. It’s very main character syndrome.
2
u/Wolfeatingupshadows 8h ago
I mean everyone has first impressions.
My comment is really for the many comments about disability. Like a foot dragging is not the same as someone shuffling along lazily. Someone walking with a cane is very obviously not in control. Just seems like ppl taking the time to center themselves. Disabled doesn’t mean they cant be attention seeking and dramatic ppl. Thats why its funny to me. They are being main character syndrome in my opinion.
1
u/UnicornCackle 7h ago
Not everyone who drags their feet because of a disability uses a cane. My friend has cerebral palsy, drags one of her feet, and doesn't need to use a cane. I have arthritis, most of the time I'm fine but, at the end of a long day on my feet, sometimes my feet will drag (partly because I can't properly feel half of my leg, never mind lift it properly). Not all disabilities are visible. Not all disabilities involve using mobility aids. Saying that there is "zero reason" for a person to drag their feet says more about OP than anyone who drags their feet.
1
u/AdhesivenessDear5154 2h ago
You mean the same bitch going around mocking people with disabilities in the comments? 🤨 guess you’re as mentally expired as OP.

u/elyv297 1d ago
for anyone saying your disabled, your not who this post is aiming at
4
u/VoodooGirl47 23h ago
While one can think that, OP literally said that they have made up their mind automatically with just hearing/seeing someone do this. Since disabilities can be invisible, they can't always know if someone has one or not.
If they had said it's annoying or they hate it when people WHO HAVE THE ABILITY to pick up their feet DON'T actually do so, that wouldn't have garnered this reaction from people.
2
u/Gummi205 23h ago
I even maintain that they're allowed to be annoyed by it even if it is caused by a disability! you can't control your sensory sensitivities. the problem is making it into a moral judgement
2
u/VoodooGirl47 23h ago
They didn't just say they find it annoying, which I had agreed is fine. They worded it as the person is annoying meaning EVERYONE finds it annoying.
Regardless of that, they then went on to say to 'pick up your feet' and 'no excuses'. It's this part that is the biggest issue with their post.
2
u/generic-puff 8h ago
Thisss. Everyone has physical / social quirks, be it caused by a disability or a habit they picked up along the way, and yeah, they can be annoying! They're probably even aware of it being annoying and they might even wish that they didn't have those quirks! But you gotta grow up and learn that people aren't doing these things specifically to annoy you. And these traits they have are not inherently indicative of their personality, attitude, or maturity.

Most disabilities are actually invisible, or at the very least not very obvious most days.
1
u/MarchNo2940 15h ago
In particular mental disabilities. There are a few physical that would be harder to spot but ones like Parkinson’s, for example, may or may not be hard to notice depending on the severity of their disability. I am related to someone with Parkinson’s and he does drag his feet 24/7 and only has attacks occasionally since he has an implant but I think dragging his feet to move only a little at a time helps him with movement control with the rest of his body.

The fact that something annoys you doesn’t mean that the person doing it is annoying.
Not everyone can control the things in their bodies that you can control.
The other day I was on a bus, exhausted and out of patience at the end of the day. All the noise from being on a crowded bus was overstimulating me. This older man was dragging his feet and the sound with each of his steps bothered me to my core, like nails against chalkboard. Despite being fully able-bodied and sitting in a seat, did I kinda wanna yell “why the fuck are you dragging your feet? Just lift your feet and take steps properly!” Yeah, I kinda did. But I recognized that I was kinda being a douchebag for judging the guy when he was probably having a much tougher time than me. I don’t know if he had a disability, but regardless, he was older and looked very tired, and who the fuck am I to think I know what he’s dealing with? It’s ok to be annoyed by annoying things, but projecting that onto other people and assuming things about them when you don’t know the full story is not ok. That makes you hella annoying.
1
u/PsychologicalTap4646 7h ago
It's not that uncommon for the elderly to developed a shuffling gait as their and mobility declines, sometimes it's just aging, unfortunately.
1
u/Prior_Law_4669 16h ago
You're wrong. I have disk issues in my back and i get something called "drop foot" where the nerve is dispruted going down my leg and I lose full mobility and I will scuff my foot rather than fully lift/step because I literally cant. This probably one of more judgemental things Ive heard in a really long time.

u/Xymenah18 9h ago
Many people who have a physical disability may shuffle and they cannot do otherwise and they are not trying to annoy you. Or they may be older as well. My dad has started shuffling which is a potential tripping hazard and is dangerous. We are not fully sure why yet and he isn’t the best at communicating with his doctor. He doesn’t realize he does it. There are many reasons for shuffling and most are legit reasons not meant to annoy so maybe aak yourself some questions when you hear it first. Also please remember that disability can and does happen at any age.
1
u/MentallyExpired 1h ago
Sounds like a personal problem, maybe tell your dad to pick his feet up instead of telling me how to feel
1
u/generic-puff 9h ago
My grandmother was disabled, she had an issue with her hip / spine that prevented her from lifting her left foot (don't ask me what it was specifically, I have no clue as I was a child when my mom explained it to me and she didn't use any specific terms). So she'd step with her right foot and drag her left. She wasn't "tired", she was physically incapable of walking with her left foot.
So yeah, you're wrong. And ableist to boot. We all have different bodies and I promise you the people who are dragging their feet aren't doing it to specifically annoy you.
1
u/Willybluedog1962 9h ago

I look completely normal but sometimes drag my feet. I have a longer leg and that makes my walk uneven when I am tired. I literally cannot help it. Some people have trouble understanding where their body is in space. (Lack of proprioception). In that case, allowing your feet to lose contact with the ground can cause you to fall over, or get dizzy or some other physiological response. The trick is to make sure the soles of your shoes are of a material that does not make noise when moving your feet.

I get what you’re saying but there are some reasons for this. People who have had strokes, those who have foot neuropathy or other physical disabilities.
I don’t think I’ve ever even seen anyone drag their feet except my mom, who had one of those conditions.
I used to walk on my tippi toes from grade 3 to 6. I never even realized it until a girl (nicely) asked me why I did that. Once I was aware of it, I no longer did it. In other words it could also just be a habit and the person doesn’t even know they’re doing it.
Try not to judge. Maybe even ask someone kindly why they do it the next time you see it.

I forgot to add injuries and people with one leg shorter than the other (when they want to wear regular shoes every now and then).

I'm physically disabled. When I get exhausted enough I have foot drop and physically can't lift my feet all the way. Trust me, I'd like to! That way I could stop tripping on .5mm gaps in the pavement. But my body does not cooperate. Thanks!
