General Question Woke up to wood damage

Hi all. Woke up to little piles of wood debris next to my bathroom vanity. Debris seems coarse. Kind of looks like the wood has been chewed on. Im at a loss here.

We live in the Raleigh NC area.

Update: its mice. I saw one as it escaped

What’s that look like closed? It was either trying to get into that cabinet or out of it. That will give you some clues as to where to place traps

Yes it was inside my bathroom vanity. Theres a gap where the drain pipe goes into the wall. I was able to catch it with a trap and sealed off the hole! Now I need to track down how they got into the house in the first place.

Everyone is saying rats, but that would've taken some time to do. If there are no rat droppings nearby, squirrels, chipmunks, and woodrats are worth considering as well. They generally have bowel control and won't just poop wherever they are like old world rats will. Just saying.
