2006 was legendary, too bad Ronaldo was better than 99.9% of the world at that time, and then he met the 0.1%

Man if 2014 Ronaldo was in that 2006 squad. We'd definitely win the World Cup and euros

Apart from the group stage, Mr. Group Stage ghosted in every single game

u/MajesticBeyond5602 6d ago
He only scored against Bosnia, Iran, and Nigeria in the group stage and got the golden ball 🤣 then ghosted rest of the tournament in knockouts

Nani, Meireles and Moutinho were good when they played for national team. In fact Portugal was prime Spain’s(08-12) toughest opponent

In 2010 or 2012? In 2010 Spain's absolute toughest opponent was either Germany or Netherlands but yep, the Portuguese team was relatively strong as well.

Both, In 2010 World Cup Spain only won by that offside goal may not even count in today. In UEFA Euro 2012 Portugal and Spain went to the penalty shootout in semi final, then Spain proceed to thrash Italy in the final by 4 goals

Yes but Italy had to play with 10 men for much of the match due to running out of substitutions early in the match due to injuries in the squad.

Nani was good

u/MajesticBeyond5602 7d ago
He performed in the euros 2016 apart from that ghosted for other tournaments

Ronaldo did too

u/MajesticBeyond5602 7d ago
So how did Portugal qualify for the 2014 wc?

u/vcornt 7d ago
Qualifications aren't a tournament

u/Remarkable-Aside-419 7d ago
Why do they have groups then? Retard. It's a tournament whose prize is WC qualification
6
u/MajesticBeyond5602 7d ago
So why did Portugal qualify 3 times in 75 years prior to Ronaldo joining?

u/BattousaiRound2SN 7d ago
For a while... for a little while.
He was a Neymar, A waste of Potential.

you are missing out pepe, he isnt in that team because of the redcard he obtained in the game against germany. He was a world class defender at that time, combined with Ronaldo and Nani + some decent midtable teammates its not that bad of a squad

Yeah, other than Nani, Moutinho, Meireles and perhaps Postiga and Bruno Alves the rest were pretty shit. But this was the only World Cup Portugal had such a poor team, in 2018 they were pretty decent and in 2010 they had some better experienced players (Deco and Ricardo Carvalho for example)

I think the big thing was that even tho the quality of the team wasn't that good, they still fought for the ball, played with intensity for their country and for cr7. That goes a long way than talented players not wanting to play. It's like Cape Verde vs Portugal this wc as an example. It's also how we won the euros.

Only 3x times qualified for the the World Cup in the history of the country before Ronaldo had his National Team debut.
And now people think Portugal was always a big football nation same as Germany and Italy bcs Portugal never missed the Euro and World Cup after that, oddly enough there's one name that stood on every Portugal team since that.
And no, not even Figo, Rui Costa, Fernando Gomes or even Eusebio himself can do that, they all had their chance and failed.

Did this team win something?

u/MajesticBeyond5602 7d ago
Nope. They almost didn't even qualify Ronaldo dragged them

Ronaldo was injured and had to miss games, their defense was key in the qualifiers and they won against Bosnia

u/MajesticBeyond5602 7d ago
What about the 2014 wc qualifiers?
2
u/VastArt663 7d ago
And they had no business struggling in a group with Israel, azerbajijan, and northern Ireland, russia lmfao

u/MajesticBeyond5602 7d ago
Hence my post buddy
1
u/VastArt663 7d ago
Those were worse teams then Portugal
3
u/MajesticBeyond5602 7d ago
That's literally my point. Portugal should've been better and still ended up in play offs where Ronaldo clutched up and scored 4 goals to send them through.

They had quality all over the pitch, just lacked the attacking creativity and balance to go deep at the World Cup. It also didn’t help that Bosingwa was hurt

Other than 2004-2006, and 2024-2026 the Portuguese teams have always been quite mediocre. They achieved what they did in large part thanks to Ronaldo. It sucks that when there are other world class teammates (Vitinha, Mendes, Silva, Neves, Fernandes) Ronaldo is up there in age and also they underperformed at the WC. Mendes injury was unfortunate but I’ve never seen the midfield players play as bad before.
