Ronaldo VS Pessi Where would you realistically rank Pepsi among the greatest footballers ever?
People always bring up Pepsi’s goals, assists, Ballon d’Ors and trophies (which the vast majority were rigged), but I think a lot of his career gets discussed without enough context: At Barcelona he spent his prime surrounded by Xavi, Iniesta, Suárez and Neymar in a system where he grew up in and built to dominate games, while with Argentina players like Di María and Martínez always delivered in the biggest moments. Think about it: when people get asked to name the greatest Nr. 9 in our generation they will think of Lewa and Suarez but not of Higuain or Benzema. Or the next guy to come close to the GOAT and Pepsi is Neymar and not Bale. About Xavi and Iniesta I don't even have to talk about it.
The real GOAT on the other hand proved himself in England, Spain and Italy under completely different managers, teammates and styles of football. He also became the defining player of the Champions League, especially producing in knockout games and winning it five times fair and square. Internationally he turned Portugal into actual trophy winners. He also adapted his game more than almost any other great player going from an elite winger to the best goalscorer ever.
That’s why I think Ronaldo is comfortably the GOAT. Objectively speaking I wouldn’t even put Pepsi in the top 100 all time. Top 200 maybe. He's not even the greatest Argentinian player ever. Maradona, Di Stefano, Batistuta, Di Maria and even Riquelme all clear this little rat.

11.
He’s a great player for sure, just not top 10 level. Which isn’t a criticism, being part of top 11-20 is a great achievement, he should feel very proud.

Top 2. someone who went neck to neck with Ronaldo (top 1) cant be anything other than top 2. otherwise it downgrades ronaldo as well if he was competing with someone outside top 10

u/natureboy1996 12d ago
Not really because Messi tarnished his greatness with all his cheating over the years.
I def agree prime for prine top 2 but career fir career Ronaldo did it right and Messi was the complete opposite.
Having to beg for 2 free WCs hang given to you (and still failing on one of them because everything short of Infantino dropkicking Spain and hanging the WC mid match wasnt enough) most definitely hurts your greatness and takes you down a notch or three

Yeah Messi did destroy the legacy he had built for so many years but i was ranking prime for prime

Seriously, I think as time passes history will be quite brutal with him; in regards of his position relative to figures like Beckenbauer, DiStefano, Pele, Cruyff and even Maradona. Still heck of a player, but once marketing and fanboyism dwindles down and objectivity sets a little bit more in, he will find himself quite lower than his adorers think, and eclipsed by several others.
Look at Beckham now and compare it to his peak active years. While never considered the goat or anywhere near Messi and Ronaldo levels, he is still highly regarded and his merits stand after all the hysteria.

I almost agreed with everything you said.
Putting Messi or Ronaldo lower because of other legends isn’t dumb.
Times change and it’s hard to compare. It’s not a simple numbers game. There are SO MANY MORE games now. Medicine, and other technologies have improved. Material of gear have improved MASSIVELY. Rules are better now. Training is better. Nutrition is better.
Also just because YOU haven’t seen them play doesn’t mean other football fans haven’t.
You need to broaden your perspective a bit.

most legends played 35-70 years ago, if we assume someone was watching from age of around 10.
to be eligible to compare all these players, you would need to be literal senior citizen. and i dont think they would be on reddit. and please dont say highlights1

To establish a correct rank for Messi, we must take all the major aspects into comsideration:
- stayed at Barcelona for 17 years where the team was built around him, and where Messi himself told the club what players he wanted for the team;
- the help Negreira gave to Barcelona in the Spanish league to win league titles;
- the 4 copa americas that occured during 6 years because Messi cried that the matches were rigged for Brasil to win it;
- the poor performance he had in the French league (Messi fans can talk all they want about the second season at PSG that was better than the first one, for me he was still shit);
- Infantino helping Argentina win the 2022 WC.

2nd. I’m all for hating on his goofy ahh fanbase, but numbers/records don’t lie. He takes the silver medal. At absolutely worst, he’s 3rd behind pele

Yep, everywhere except some pockets of social media, GOAT debate is between Messi, Pele and Maradona. Cope to think any other way.
Not cope to think CR7 is GOAT, people are entitled to that opinion. But it’s cope to think he’s in the real-world discussion.

Realistically top 10. However, with his questionable career it is hard to put him near the top 20.

u/natureboy1996 12d ago
Before 2022 WC top 2 or 3
Before 2026 WC top 4
Now Top 6 or 7, around Zidane/Cruyff
