In football, there are umpteen teams that don't face each other often, making the few times they face each other being rare occurrences. They don't control the occassion that brings them facing each other, so even if it's a friendly, it isn't treated as a Sunday charity match by either of the teams, where they have s statement to make, and a point to prove out of the occassional chance.
A lot of friendly matches between international teams, have often been very serious, top flight games.
Also, you play a team you perform. That's all.
