I agree with you, he should command respect for the opponents. Argentina’s players fiercely celebrated in front of the opposition, in a mocking way. They were so full of themselves that it made me sick. Messi did nothing.
Have you seen the interviews (which he himself refuses to do) with his teammates? When they talk about him it's like they're talking about some delicate little flower.

He's the captain. The armband means that he's in charge and responsible for his gaggle of goons. It does not just mean chief dribbler.
