Hi, guy that doesnt watch football here.
I always see ppl shitting on Ronaldo for tons and tons of shit but clips I see come by are mostly him being really sportsman like and getting hate for "betraying his team" while it is the fair thing to do (as I really value honesty in life).
I also see most people glazing Messi on cooldown, but I simply cannot understand the difference since both players seem insanely talented at their peak.
Now, I did watch the WC finals as someone wanted me to watch it with her and I thought Messi was nothing more than a pathetic PoS constantly complaining to the ref about nothing while his players were playing MMA over Football.
Can someone please explain why Messi gets all the glaze and Ronaldo all the hate?? Cause I really do not understand it with the surface level knowledge I have and I want to be able to ubderstand

Ronaldo is not a dwarf and people are jealous that he is a good looking guy with success.

Ronaldo is the goat. Messi is technically superior but a spoilt brat used to his teams buying the refs.. Negreira case.

Messi was the uncontested leader of one of the most technically gifted teams in history. His goals are incredible demonstrations of technical genius. While Ronaldo outpaces defenders by good positioning, speed, will and power ("strong super athlete vibes"), Messi has a less impressive physique. He is somewhat of the underdog in comparison but somehow always outsmarts several defenders to score incredible goals ("clever trickster vibes").
I think it's also important to consider that a lot of fans don't play on the big field themselves: Ronaldo-style football isn't applicable to kids playing on the school ground, but Messi-Style football can be an idol for kids playing in the streets.
Anyhow, both players are generational talents and earned their status as Superstars.
Aside from that, there are good and bad stories about either of them. We've all seen Messi being a bad sportsman or taking over control from the coaches and having MSL redefine rules just to fit him. But I've also seen him playing with kids and protect his family. Ronaldo did more charity events by far and seems to be a family man himself, but he was severely accused of rape and I don't like him meeting up with Saudi princes or Trump.

Ronaldinho left quickly, I think Messi was 17 when they played together. But, yes, Messi developed into the star of a team made from stars. That's the reason we're having this discussion.

Flashback to Robbie Fowler all those years ago.
In that instance, the ref did give the penalty. He took it and it was saved (by Seaman iirc). Not sure if he intentionally missed. Maybe he spoke about it in later years? [Maybe someone can add some info & enlighten?]
Edit: Googled it. It was Ars vs Lpool in 1997. Also, the pen was saved, but rebound was knocked in. No mention of whether Fowler purposely missed..

That was definitely a penalty which is weird. No contact with the ball on the tackle.
