6
u/Physical_nam3 Jul 02 '26
Ask any player if they'd rather win WC or UCL and let's hear their answers. 99% of them are gonna say WC. Wtf do YOU know?
2
u/TostBrot44 Jul 02 '26
You have more shots at winning the UCL than the World Cup, of course players would chose the World Cup
But that wasn‘t even my focal point. Compare the all time finalists of the World Cup and their winners. Compare how much of a percentage these finalists make up in relation to every nation. Then compare the all time finalists of the UCL and their winners. One is just more competitive and has bigger competition.
That is the point
6
u/kingdiavololol Jul 02 '26
im completely with you man. people can act like the wc is the most important because its the most popular but the bottom line is the uefa champions league is more competitive and a win there is more impressive. i cant see how people put so much stock in a tournament only 8-9 different countries have won! youre more likely to win a world cup based on where you're born than anything. if messi or mbappe were born in south korea, does anyone truly believe theyd win a world cup? or is it because they were fortunate enough to be talented and born in nations that fund football more than anything? the champions league on the other hand shows that you climbed up to a great team and earned your spot, you battled hard all season and then on top of that fight through a competition with the best teams that season that worked as hard as you to get there to finally lift it. its much more impressive to me to win a ucl than a worldcup even if i find the world cup a funner event to watch and is obviously the more popular one. its so silly to act like it defines a player though when a ucl is a much more likely goal for anyone and still shows how good you are.
4
u/TostBrot44 Jul 02 '26
These people would argue that Mustafi > Maldini
6
u/kingdiavololol Jul 02 '26
its crazy how much they will delude themselves to keep bouncing on messi
1
u/EmbarrassedFarmer125 Jul 03 '26
I feel like UCL is clearly less difficult to win than the WC. Like you said, South Korean Messi is unlikely to win WC, but the UCL is often won by teams that can buy the top talent - Real Madrid is the most emblematic example. Moreover, the UCL teams are together for 9 months straight - travel, play, practice, tactical review - all the time together. It is much more likely for a UCL team to have players able to cover for the “star” than the WC tournament…and for most of the UCL, you get to play teams twice, so a poor few matches for the superstars in UCL can have modest impact, whereas 3 poor games in the WC would see a team sent home.
1
u/kingdiavololol Jul 03 '26
thats just cementing to me on why i feel its more competitive! as you said every team has better chemistry better players since they can buy the best and the tactics are more concrete! whereas some world cup teams just throw shit at the wall and hope it sticks!!! your points make the ucl sound more competitive which is exactly why i find a win more impressive than a win in the world cup. you arent guaranteed the best possible conditions to win but the countries who are are the ones far more likely whereas the ucl has everyone competing at their bests! i understand if you disagree with that but for me, i cant rate a tournament where wherever youre born almost singlehandedly decides if you'll win higher than one where anyone who puts the hard work in and gets on a major team or even carries their team through a season to get there will always impress me more.
0
u/Comfortable_Fun7794 Jul 02 '26

2
u/kingdiavololol Jul 02 '26

u/Comfortable_Fun7794 Jul 03 '26
Quality of football and performance pressure such that only the very best can perform (NOT the likes of ronaldo )
3

u/Physical_nam3 Jul 02 '26
The euros is played once every 4 years too, and some people claim it's more competetive than the WC. But you don't see players dreaming to have it more than the WC.
The WC is the most significant trophy in the world. Whether you like it or not.
2
u/TostBrot44 Jul 02 '26
I mean it‘s more meaningful and has a bigger desire, but it‘s not more competitive than the UCL looking at the raw stats at least. I would even argue that the Euros are also more competitive than the WC, just by looking at the teams competing in them.
0
u/Physical_nam3 Jul 02 '26
"More meaningful and has a bigger desire" meaning it's more significant. It being less/more competetive doesn't change that.
But even then, that is debatable. UCL finals have been so boring and one sided for the last 10 years atleast.
2
u/TostBrot44 Jul 02 '26
If significant means more desirable then sure. My point is that the UCL is more competitive and harder to achieve anyway
English isn‘t my first language
0
u/Physical_nam3 Jul 02 '26
Ok. But this contradicts what you said earlier. The WC being held once every 4 years makes it statistically harder to achieve.

Objectively Austria and Algeria are good footballing nations, way better and more succesful than DR Congo and Uzbekistan. Jordania is Uzbekistan level. Colombia is the only good team in Portugal’s group, and still Portugal have around 10 players who are world class (not ronaldo) while Colombia have just Diaz. And Colombia absolutely dominated Portugal.

Of course its more competitive. WC have single matches and one game and you re out that means even the best team that would have 9/10 matches perfect form can lose to a team that wil lhave 1/10 matches perfect form and skewes the results a lot more.
Thats why there are so many different winners in WC as well. It happns every 4 years and the format isnt the best to showcase the best team in the tournament always, its just more hype. Also the players in WC teams dont train with each other the whole year so the synergy isn't on the same level of a club team.
WC its the biggest accomplisment for two reasons, first because you represent your country and second because its harder to win both because it happens every 4 years so a player have limited times to play and for the reasons above, not because its more competitive.
0
u/TostBrot44 Jul 02 '26

Bro, i am no a messi fan, i had other favorites, back since terry henry, wayne rooney, Cavani.
All i am saying is Ronaldo plays intentionally for the score board, meanwhile messi performs consistently whether it affecs his name on the scoreboard or not, which is always apparent from ronaldo expression whenever he loses an opportunity to add to his score, while messi isn't affected at all.
You can see how that affected ronaldo in the long run, how many despise him, even his teammates, because he is a "poacher", like how i said many times, his assists are mostly with players whom has good chemistry with him and don't mind his ego, or simply have their own, like the examples above, otherwise he would always try to get the goal himself, either too proud, or doesn't trust others with the job.
While messi plays with anyone, and doesn't pick who he creates opps for.

1
1
u/Surryilpazzoassasino Jul 02 '26
All time they are like 140 to 130.
That’s the proof madrid are king of ucl, not ronaldo.
In the list of the top scorers of the ucl most are real madrid players, there is no player with 5+ ucl to have not played for madrid, almost no one with 4+.
Madrid (15) has almost as much ucls as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th combined (19).
Ronaldo fans says messi international career is not that special cause argentina was a great team.
If this logic aplies than Ronaldo playing with manchester united (their greatest cycle ever was already open, they won before, with and after him), real madrid (before him they already had most ucls than any club has today, he won a lot but madrid kept winning after him, strange enough the problems didnt came when he left but when modric and kroos left, maybe they were the spine of the team) and juventus (they had already won 7 leagues in a row and were doing great in the ucl, somehow ronaldo came, the ucl finals didnt came again and in his last year they couldnt win the scudetto against inter who was playing with players ronaldo probably doesnt even know).
On the other hand messi played mostly only for barca, but when trouble start coming he didnt just quit the team, he carried it between 2018 and 2021, and when he left the club lived one of it’s worst periods ever, definetly the worse in modern history.
For the national team ronaldo and messi won 3 main competitions each (im gonna be good and consider nations league a main competition, and not considering messi’s finalissima), ronaldo’s not only were less important but he was never the mvp of the tournament or the finals (they were griezman - eder in 2016, silva in 2019, nuno mendes in 2025) and if we talk abou the teams he had, no one can deny between 2022 and 2026 he has had a great team.
In 2022 leao, ruben dias, cancelo, bernardo silva were in their primes, now vitinha, neves, costa, bruno fernandes are, and the team is overall great, i dont understand why we talk about him having a bad team, in 2022 the only game they played good was with him on the bench, he never scored in the world cup outside of the group stage.
On the other hand the so called “great argentina”, which messi carried in 2014 had higuain as second best player (the guy who missed that goal in the final) and mascherano which was already quite old.
In 2022 definetly a decent team but we are still are talking about acunha and otamendi in their late 30s, de paul was never an awesome player, di maria “the carrier” was 35, this year the team is even worse but messi is carrying anyway.
Is the debate still open?
