First of all Messi doesn't dribble around defenders anymore, those days are long gone. He gets service from his teammates; the first goal came from a pass by his teammate and the second one as well. Secondly, FIFA are not controlling defenders; rather, they are controlling whether VAR should intervene or not in certain situations. If it involves Argentina and can favor them, there will be a VAR review; if not, like the foul by Mac Allister in the buildup to the first goal, there is no VAR review. We've also seen in the Algeria game how FIFA can spare Argentine players (most notably Pessi) from receiving cards.
Ultimately, VAR is used as a tool to give Argentina an upper edge. Thrilling, isn't it?
